Smoking ban doesn't worry local owners

Even though the proposed smoking ban in the Indiana House of Representatives has been amended to exempt most bars, local restaurant and bar managers said they were never worried about it. Co-owner of Doc's Music Hall Michael Martin, a non-smoker, said the issue has never been something he has ever thought about a lot.

Slate fails to apply correctly

Despite the best efforts of the Student Government Association, the Elections Board and the one slate that showed up this year's nomination convention suffered a fate similar to last year's. Unlike last year, a slate showed up to the convention, but the Elections Board decided the slate's election packet did not meet all the requirements.

Student creates group to change policy

One Ball State student is encouraging others to take a stand on national economic policy. Senior Cody Willis' unofficial student group, Let's Stand, will meet at 10 p.m. today in Bracken Library Rm. 401. He said his goal was to get a diverse group of people together and come up with a multidimensional business plan with hopes of changing national policy.

The pseudo-slate that wants to represent you in Student Government Association has reached a hiccup in its campaign, and it has only been one day. The nomination convention to announce a slate's intention to run for SGA was Monday night, and the only slate that showed up had errors in its application.

SWIMMING AND DIVING: Cardinals ready to go out strong

Standing on the diving board at Ohio University in February 2006, David Linn thought he had nothing but time as a Ball State diver. Fast-forward three years and now Linn stands a senior and ready to dive for the last time as a Cardinal. Linn, along with follow seniors Mark Augustyn and Kyle Hembree will make their final trip to the Mid-American Conference championship this week.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ball State announces alumni reunion weekend

The 1988-89 Ball State University men's basketball team will be featured for its 20th anniversary as part of the athletics department's annual Men's Basketball Alumni Reunion Weekend on Saturday. Members of Ball State men's basketball from 1960 through 2008 will attend the reunion weekend, Ball State announced today.

New SGA slates to announce candidacy

Student Government Association's nomination convention is expected to run smoothly, Elections Chair Marco Pretell-Vazquez said. The Elections Board met Friday to address any last minute issues before the convention, he said. The board made sure it was unbiased and able to contact each other should a problem arise.

Network changes begin

Today marks the beginning of phase 1 of Ball State's transition to a more secure wireless infrastructure. In phase 1, like the system set-up last semester, students will need to use their Ball State username and password to log in to the network via their internet browser.

GYMNASTICS: Ball State falls in conference play

The Ball State University gymnastics team lost 191.900 to 193.000 to Eastern Michigan University on Sunday evening. High scores for the Cardinals included a first-place tie on the vault between Ashley Jacobs and Brittney Emmons with a score of 9.80. Emmons added another first-place tie on the floor routine with Teresa Phipps by scoring another 9.

Ball State University women's basketball player Danielle Gratton was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District ballot Monday. The junior forward will represent the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V Team along with Kelsey Luna from Indiana State University, Agnieszka Kulaga of Valparaiso University, Kristi Cirone of Illinois State University and Alyssa Karel from the University of Wisconsin.

Gary Brackett to speak on campus Feb. 23

Students no longer need to call 765-285-4545 to see which Indianapolis Colts player will be coming to campus. The answer to the question posed on the paper signs is linebacker Gary Brackett. The defensive captain will be speaking at Ball State as part of an event co-sponsored by Student Life and the Multicultural Center.

Alum works on feature film

Ball State University alumnus Benjamin Vu worked on a movie that is making film history in theaters. Directed by Henry Selick, "Coraline" is the first stop-motion feature film to be shot in 3-D. To do this, separate pictures are taken for each eye and then the images are projected together onto the screen, Vu said.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards capitalize on 3-pointers to drive straight past Bobcats

The Ball State University women's basketball team finished off its last Mid-American Conference East division opponent with an 80-72 win over Ohio University on Saturday in Worthen Arena. The Bobcats took the lead early with a 3-point basket but junior guard Audrey McDonald hit back-to-back 3's to take the lead, which the Cardinals (17-8, 9-2 MAC) never relinquished.

Israeli self-defense instructor teaches today

A martial arts instructor will come to Ball State University to demonstrate Krav Maga, an Israeli form of self-defense that is practiced by soldiers of the Israeli Defense Force. Etay Furman, a soldier who recently graduated from the IDF, is being hosted by the Ball State chapter of Hillel, a nationwide Jewish organization, and will be showing the basics of the fighting style to anyone willing to take part in the lesson.
