Friedman talks about book

Thomas Friedman announced that green is the new red, white and blue to a crowd of about 1,350 people Wednesday night at John R. Emens Auditorium. Friedman, a three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author and columnist, was the second speaker in the Bracken Environmental Speaker Series sponsored by the provost and president's office along with Gaylor, Mutual Bank, Old National Bank and STAR Financial Group.

TRACK AND FIELD: Cards take home MAC accolades

The Ball State University track and field team rode home from the Mid-American Conference Championships with two heavy awards weighting down their bus. Cardinals junior Ali Bishel and fifth-year senior Amber Williams collected two out of the possible three honors received at the conclusion of the invitational held in Kent, Ohio, this weekend.

Cardinal Impact huddled together crying and laughing about five minutes before the 2009 Student Government Association elections results were announced. Before the results came in, SGA President-elect Beth Cahill said her stomach was knotted, she had trouble breathing, her hands were clammy and all she could do was pray.

Five teams sign up for McKinley mile

The Office of Student Life finally received team applications for the McKinley mile bike race Monday afternoon. Four men and one women's teams signed up, graduate assistant Kristan Kanorr said, which is about the same as last year. "I'd like to see a couple more girl's teams come in and even out the playing field," she said.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards look for outright West title

The only blemish on the season against Mid-American Conference West opponents for the Ball State University women's basketball team came against Northern Illinois on Jan. 21 when the Huskies handed the Cardinals their first conference loss. Ball State (20-8, 12-2 MAC) looks to even the season series against the Huskies (14-13, 9-5 MAC) at 7 p.

When University Coalition gathered at the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity house to hear the results of the Student Government Association election, the slate wasn't sure what to expect. "All I know is that there's gonna be a big, green check mark graphic for whoever won," presidential candidate Kerri Cropper said.

Ball State University alumna Joanna Lees just finished stating her answers in the form of a question. Lees, a 2007 journalism graduate, was chosen for the popular television game show "Jeopardy!" earlier this year, but finished the show's taping Tuesday, she said.

Sen. Lugar announced as commencement speaker

Sen. Richard Lugar, Indiana's senior senator and the U.S. Senate's ranking Republican, will serve as the Commencement speaker at Ball State University on May 9, according to a press release. Elected to his sixth term in 2006, Lugar is the longest serving U.

BASEBALL: Center fielder wins conference award

For the second straight week a member of the Ball State University baseball team was named Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week. Junior center fielder Jeremy Hazelbaker was the latest Cardinal to pick up the award after he went 6-for-10 in the Austin Peay Invitational.

The Ball State University football team was honored Tuesday by the Indiana General Assembly for its undefeated regular season. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Toledo loses, Cards at least get share of title

Despite not playing Tuesday, the Ball State University women's basketball team came one step closer to winning an out-right division title. Sitting in second place in the Mid-American Conference West Division, the University of Toledo lost to Central Michigan 80-70 in Mount Pleasant, Mich.

University begins gathering data for geothermal project

Ball State University began drilling test holes today for its geothermal energy project that begins the day after Spring commencement. Jim Lowe, director of engineering and operations, said test well fields are common for projects like this. The test holes will be used to test the capacity for heat exchange.
