MEN'S TENNIS: Cardinals look to open conference play on a good note

While most students will pack up and leave for their Spring Break destinations today, the Ball State University's men's tennis team will be hard at work. That's because the Cardinals will try to sweep a doubleheader against Chicago State University and Anderson University.

Sen. Richard Lugar to be Commencement speaker

Sen. Richard Lugar will be Ball State University's Commencement speaker this May, according to a press release. Lugar, the Senate's ranking Republican, was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1976 and won a sixth term in 2006 with 87 percent of the vote, according to his Web site.

TRACK AND FIELD: Cardinals get last shot to qualify for NCAA Championships

The last grain of sand in the hourglass will fall this weekend for the Ball State University track and field team to qualify for the NCAA provisionals. Before time runs out, the Cardinals will travel to South Bend for the Alex Wilson Invitational for their last attempt to make time requirements for the 2009 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in College Station, Texas.

WOMEN'S GOLF: Cardinals take motivation from last week into invitational

The Ball State University women's golf team will tee off in Rio Verde, Ariz., today in 20-team field. Northern Arizona University plays host to six Mid-American Conference teams along with three Big Ten teams. The Cardinals played in this same tournament almost exactly a year ago, finishing in a tie for ninth out of 18 teams.

For some groups on Ball State University's campus Spring Break will mean helping people instead of traveling for enjoyment. Members of The Revolution church, greek students, Student Voluntary Services and people involved in the The Timmy Foundation will be traveling to various locales to help those in need.

BASEBALL: Ball State looks to knock off preseason top 25 team

Preseason rankings are often blown off by coaches as meaningless accolades. The Ball State University baseball team will get a firsthand look at why so many ignore preseason polls. The University of Missouri baseball team, the Cardinals' next opponent, began the season ranked No. 20 in the country. The Tigers have started the year 3-7, including a seven-game losing streak.Despite Missouri's struggles, coach Greg Beals said he expects a strong test for Ball State in its four-game series beginning at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

SWIMMING AND DIVING: Lone Cardinal prepares for NCAA Zone Diving Championship

Lewellen Pool was fairly quiet this week except for the occasional splash from the diving well. Lisa Maertin is the only member of the Ball State University swimming and diving team still competing after qualifying for the NCAA Zone Diving Championship. It is the second time the junior diver has qualified for the event.

OUR VIEW: Be prepared

It seems like a Student Government Association free for all. The Elections Board took Monday off instead of addressing campaign violations by two of the three slates running. Cardinal Collaboration and University Coalition have been accused of e-mail campaigning, Elections Board chair Marco Pretell-Vazquez said.

New grant would be used to improve environment

Muncie and Ball State University are partnering to develop a grant proposal to the Environmental Protection Agency that could allocate up to $400,000 to address environmental problems in the city.

Kappa Delta helps troops sell cookies

Muncie girl scout troops will receive help selling their girl scout cookies from Kappa Delta sorority Tuesday and Thursday. Members from Kappa Delta will set tables up from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.  in the Teacher's College Lobby, the Arts and Communication Building and the Business Building's first floor lounge.

On Sunday, I saw that Rasmussen conducted a telephone poll. Fifty-nine percent of Americans agree with former President Ronald Reagan's statement that "government is the problem, not the solution." Since a well-defined understanding of government's place in society is absolutely essential for responsible citizenship, let's think about Reagan's statement.
