Board of Trustees meeting scheduled for this afternoon

A Board of Trustees meeting will take place at 4 p.m. today at Bracken Library. An executive session is scheduled for 1 p.m. A highlight of the executive meeting is the transfer of real estate property from the university to a commercial enterprise. Director of University Communications Kevin Burke said proposals from three legal entities will be considered: one for-profit, one limited liability and one not-for-profit company.

"Coming into the season we decided as a team that winning this tournament would be one of our goals," libero Christie Waters said. Family tradition still brewing

Wine and beer are in Jeff Johnson's blood. The owner of the Muncie wine, beer and hydroponic supply store Wine-N-Vine, is carrying on his family's history of beer and winemaking. It started with his great-grandfather who brewed bootleg beer during Prohibition in the 1920s.

Ball State reports 2 H1N1 cases

Ball State University officials confirmed Wednesday that there have been two students likely infected with swine flu this school year. Kent Bullis, director of the Amelia T. Wood Health Center, said the Indiana State Department of Health told Ball State the strains tested positive for influenza A, a virus that is the H1N1 strain in 98 percent of patients.

White River cleanup planned for Saturday

Several Ball State University student organizations will participate in Muncie Delaware Clean and Beautiful's second annual White River cleanup Saturday. The cleanup could be the largest in the river's history, cleanup coordinator Layne Cameron said. Cameron, who is vice president of MDCB and associate director of University Communications, said Muncie residents, Ball State Freshman Connections students and the Natural Resources Club and Students for a Sustainable Campus will wade through the White River, picking up trash, such as water bottles, plastic grocery bags and auto parts, along the way.

Volunteering on Sept. 11 a way to turn a negative to a positive

Ball State University is taking a proactive approach to commemorating the events of Sept. 11, 2001. For the first time, Student Voluntary Services and the United Way of Delaware County are partnering to provide students with five different opportunities to volunteer to honor Patriot Day.

MEN'S TENNIS: Economy affects team's schedule

All of the trouble Wall Street has had this year with the economy has trickled down to the Cardinal Creek Tennis Courts on McKinley Avenue. Economic reasons played a huge factor in this year's schedule for the Ball State University's men's tennis team. "We definitely have to tighten our belt," coach Bill Richards said.

The American Medical Association calls sexual assault a "silent epidemic," with 65 percent of attacks going unreported. Add alcohol consumption by college students into that equation, which the AMA says contributes to an estimated 70,000 cases of sexual assault or date rape each year, and that equals a lot of unpunished crime.

The search for their first win of the season continues for the Ball State University soccer team. An 0-4 start to the season has left the team searching for answers and a way to get themselves in the win column for the first time this season. The Cardinals have another chance to get a win tonight on the road against the University of Dayton.

Obama outlines health care reforms

In his special address to Congress on Wednesday night, President Barack Obama declared that no other president would need to battle through the health care debate because he would pass the legislation. "I'm not the first president to take up this cause, but I am determined to be the last," Obama said, citing Teddy Roosevelt as the first president to bring up the reform.

Library upgrades software, plans workshops

Ball State University students now have the opportunity to find several documents in one search thanks to the addition of Multisearch and Multilink to the University Libraries' database. University Libraries is offering workshops Sept. 10 and Sept. 16 for students to learn how to use these new programs and get familiar with them.

UPB fuels up for first "Wired!" show of the year

University Program Board is giving underage students the opportunity to hear and enjoy local music. Wired! will be held from 8 to 9 p.m. in the Student Center Tally. Admission is free. The event began in February 2008 as a way to enjoy local music talent before the weekend.

Ball State alumnus named president of University of Cincinnati

CINCINNATI - A Ball State University alumnnus and Muncie native was named the new president at the University of Cincinnati on Wednesday. Gregory Williams was selected as the school's 27th president by Cincinnati trustees after serving as the president of the City College of New York.

Religious item valued at $4,000 stolen from local church

A precious religious item was stolen from Saint Francis of Assisi University Parish somewhere between 10 p.m. last Thursday and 6:30 a.m. last Friday. There are no suspects and there were not any witnesses, according to the police report filed Tuesday morning.

Smoking area removed from Ball State's campus

Smokers on Ball State University's campus may have to walk a little farther before lighting up now that there is one less designated smoking area. An e-mail sent Tuesday announced that the smoking area between the Arts and Communications Building and Pruis Hall has been eliminated.

Card swipe system tracks event attendance

Ball State University students are becoming accustomed to the new ID swiping program that most on-campus events are using. Lynda Wiley, assistant vice president for Student Affairs and director of Student Life, said even though the ID swiping program started last year, the program will be more enhanced this year.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Phillips named MAC Player of the Week

After posting 37 kills last week, Charde' Phillips has been named the Mid-American Conference West Offensive Player of the Week. During the first home match of the season for Ball State University against IPFW on Friday, Phillips had a career high 14 kills en route to a Cardinal sweep.

Flag football tournament is newest addition to Homecoming 2009 events

Ball State University Homecoming Steering Committee members are wearing custom jerseys this week in honor of a new Homecoming activity: flag football. Senior Jada Buchanan, awards and judges chairwoman, said she hopes the jerseys will spark interest in the tournament and prompt students to ask committee members about the new event.

FOOTBALL: Defense looks to rebound from poor opening night

With nine defensive starters returning for Ball State University, the defense was supposed to be the unit to lead the team. Instead, the Cardinals gave up 512 yards of total offense to the University of North Texas in the season opening 20-10 loss. "The whole defense didn't play worth a crap," defensive coordinator Doug Graber said.
