BASEBALL: Hazelbaker batting less than .200 after first week in minors

Almost one week after signing a major league contract, former Ball State University baseball player Jeremy Hazelbaker has already began his professional career. After eight games, Hazelbaker is batting .174, with four hits from 23 at bats. Hazelbaker also has notched two runs, an RBI, six walks and three stolen bases.

Ball State offers class teaching people Second Life

One of Ball State University's new classes is being offered entirely in a virtual world known as Second Life. The class, "Building 101: The Building Blocks of Second Life," is an eight-hour course that includes lectures and hands-on-building in the world of Second Life.

FOOTBALL: 5 Ball State incoming freshman to play in state all-star game

Five incoming freshman for the Ball State University football team will get one last chance to suit up as high schoolers Friday at the Grange Insurance Indiana North/South All-Star Football Classic. Out of the eight total recruits from Indiana that are in this year's freshman class, all but three of them will be playing in the game.

After being delayed eight months from its original release date last November, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" is poised to become a huge summer blockbuster when it opens Wednesday. The sixth movie in the hit franchise boasts the largest budget - $250 million - of any of the films so far, which indicates that the special effects and overall atmosphere of the wizarding world could be top notch.

MEN'S GOLF: Card earns honor for performance in class, on course

Ball State University men's golfer Ross Cosat has been named to the Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-American Scholar Team. Cosat is one of 108 players to be named to the team by the Golf Coaches Association of America. In order to qualify for the team, golfers must have a minimum 3.

Muncie City Council signs resolution against Rep. Pence earmarks stance

Muncie City Council adopted a resolution last week asking U.S. Rep. Mike Pence to reconsider his one-year ban on earmark requests. The resolution was passed in a 6-3 vote last week. Congressman Pence's current stance on earmark requests prevents Ball State University from continuing its renovation of McKinley and Riverside avenues, Phil Sachtleben, vice president of governmental relations at Ball State, said.

New Ball State student trustee Vauter ready for first board meeting

A newly elected student member of Ball State University's Board of Trustees was announced earlier this week. Junior finance and economics major Nicole Vauter said she will jump right in at her first meeting, where she will be voting on the budget and tuition rates for the upcoming school year.

FOOTBALL: 2008 Ball State, Western Michigan game to re-air on ESPNU

Saturday morning at midnight, ESPNU will be replaying the football game from Nov. 25 between Ball State University and Western Michigan University. The game was originally aired on ESPN 2. Ball State beat Western Michigan 45-22 at Scheumann Stadium and, in doing so, secured a perfect 12-0 regular season.

Muncie City Council discusses income tax rate increase

A resolution discussed at Monday night's city council meeting could affect the amount of taxes employees in Muncie will pay starting in 2010. The resolution, which proposed an income tax rate increase of 1.25 percent to provide funding for public safety, was tabled at Monday's meeting to be further discussed at the next city council meeting in August.

Construction vehicle at Ball State goes up in flames

Traffic and construction near Kinghorn Hall were halted Wednesday morning after an truck carrying asphalt burst into flames. Although the official report of the incident wasn't available as of Wednesday night, Gene Burton, director of public safety at Ball State University, said the fire was caused by a propane tank that was on the back of the truck.
