End of tax for businesses could raise other rates

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Gov. Mike Pence’s call to eliminate the personal property tax for businesses could end up raising taxes for homeowners and residents throughout the state, depending on how local governments react, according to a legislative report completed Monday. Analysts for the nonpartisan Legislative Services Agency determined that the tax would amount for about $1.06 billion in proceeds for local government in 2015, creating budget havoc if it were completely removed.

Part of suit over Spierer's disappearance stands

INDIANAPOLIS — A federal judge is allowing a lawsuit to move forward against two men who were with a 20-year-old Indiana University student before she disappeared in 2011. The parents of Lauren Spierer filed the lawsuit against former IU students Jason Rosenbaum and Corey Rossman.

South Bend rapper embraces his homeless past

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Ricki David’s been on the other side of this window. The 25-year-old South Bend hip-hop producer takes a plate of food — turkey, veggies, mashed potatoes and bread — from fiancée Charee Williams and hands it to a worker through the glass that greets everybody who walks off Michigan Street into the Center for Homeless. The couple not only bring bags of meals for some of the 21 families housed at the shelter on this snowy Saturday, they also have toys for the kids. David used to be one of those kids. Growing up in Michigan City, David bounced from shelter to shelter with his mother, sister and brother.

Zavier Turner performs well in loss to strong opponent

The Ball State men’s basketball team came into Tuesday’s game against Marquette as the underdogs to one of the powerhouses of the Big East Conference. The Cardinals fell to the Golden Eagles, 53-91, while the Golden Eagles had seven players score in double digits. Ball State’s freshman guard Zavier Turner outscored everyone inside the BMO Harris Bradley Center to finish the game with 16 points and five assists in 31 minutes of play for the Cardinals.

FOOTBALL: Rich Skrosky reportedly named head coach at Elon

Ball State football with be without one assistant coach for its bowl game. It was reported Wednesday afternoon that offensive coordinator Rich Skrosky will become the head coach at Elon. Skrosky, who has spent the last three seasons at Ball State under head coach Pete Lembo, will be introduced Thursday at noon as the new head coach, according to The Pendulum.
