University police see increase in break-ins during 2014 Winter Break

The number of break-ins the University Police Department responds to typically increases over winter break, and this year was no exception. University Police Department responded to seven calls for burglary during winter break, an increase from zero calls after fall semester 2013 and four calls after fall semester 2012, according to public records obtained by the Daily News.

Ball State Hispanic enrollment increases

Although both African-American and Native-American enrollment has dropped at Ball State, the number of Hispanic and Latino undergraduates enrolled at Ball State has more than doubled in five years. Undergraduate Hispanic enrollment has risen from 350 in 2008-09 to 562 in 2013-14 according to the Diversity Committee Report through recruitment and multiculturalism.

State legislators to work on bills for 2015 legislative session

The Indiana General Assembly is back in session for 2015. Here are some of the laws that senators and representatives have proposed that could impact Ball State students. Education Senate Bill 109- Education support What it says: Child support for education will not be required after the child turns 19. Why it matters: Students receiving money from child support to help with education may not get funding after they turn 19. Senate Bill 259- STEM program What it says: I-STEM Resource Network and the state would establish a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) associates degree program at five universities within the state. Why it matters: High school students would have the option to get an associate’s degree in a STEM related field at one of five universities before they graduate.

Graduate student calls Paris shooting an attack on freedoms

When three masked gunmen shot and killed 12 people at a Paris newspaper, a graduate student from France said they took away the freedom of press French people have. The French motto is “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity” and Laura Valandro, the graduate student, said the gunmen targeted the freedom of French people to be able to publish what they want.
