MEN'S TENNIS: Cards look to gain wins in contest

The Ball State University's men's tennis team will look to get back to its winning ways when it hosts a pair of matches at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center this weekend. After dropping three straight contests against Big Ten opponents, the No. 68 Cardinals (2-3) will face the University of Dayton (0-2) and the University of Indianapolis on Saturday.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cardinals falter again in last minute against MAC-leading Huskies

DEKALB, Ill. -- Ball State and Northern Illinois went neck and neck for 39 minutes on Wednesday until the Huskies made the plays that counted in the final seconds. The Cardinals, who were searching for their first conference road win of the season, gave up an open layup and committed a turnover during a 10-second stretch that sent the game into Northern Illinois' favor.

SWIMMING AND DIVING: Cards compete in final dual meet

The men's and women's swimming and diving teams are on a two and three-meet winning streak, respectively, and hope to use that momentum as they travel to Mid-American Conference competitor Ohio University in the final dual meet of the regular season. "This will probably be our toughest dual meet that we can win," graduate assistant coach Erica Janssen said.

Both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams added wins to their dual meet records after handing Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis another regular season loss. "We had some, not only season best times, but some best times for Lewellen Aquatic Center," co-coach Bob Thomas said.

Schools are not testing children's pre-reading skills properly, a Ball State University study found. The study, performed by Ball State professors Lawrence Smith, Jerrell Cassady, Diane Bottomley and Scott Popplewell, tested a model made up of 14 separate tasks.

Legislation showing student support for an expansion of Ball State University's recreational facilities is now available for presentation to the Indiana State Legislature. The Student Government Association unanimously passed the legislation Wednesday afternoon at its weekly meeting.

There will be no ranked teams on the docket for the women's tennis team this weekend. After playing Kansas and Indiana on back-to-back weekends, they will get a break of sorts as IPFW comes to town for a Friday evening match. IPFW's (1-1) two opponents thus far have both played the Cardinals.

FOOTBALL: Signing Day 2006

Seven Georgia and six Indiana seniors were among the 22 football recruits announced as members of the 2006 Ball State University football class.-á Fourteen recruits will play on the defensive side of the ball. The Cardinals also picked up players from Ohio (three), Florida (two) and one apiece from Michigan, Missouri, Wisconsin and Illinois.

Student arrested for 10 counts of burglary

Former Ball State University student Joshua Springer, 19, 2512 E. 27th St. was arrested for 10 counts of burglary for breaking into several rooms in Studebaker West Complex. Springer was found with items including iPods, books, a calculator, a watch and cash.

The men's and women's swimming and diving teams will have a tough weekend of competition, where a home pool advantage may be the deciding factor. "We swim well on the road, but we also swim well in our own pool," co-coach Bob Thomas said. "Other teams tend to struggle a little bit in our pool and hopefully that'll be the case on Friday.

GYMNASTICS: Cardinals strive for improvement

After revisiting some mistakes from last weekend, the Ball State University gymnastics team made some upgrades to their routines. Specifically, they took part of their practice on Monday to make improvements on the bars, beam and floor. Coach Lisa Simonton said these errors were made from the gymnasts feeling good about their routines and letting up at the end.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Late comeback unable to give Ball State victory

OXFORD, Ohio -A furious late rally almost allowed Ball State University to escape with a come-from-behind road victory on Wednesday. But two free throws by Miami's (Ohio) Eve Pyle with two seconds left gave the RedHawks a 66-65 win. "It was too late by the time we started to compete," coach Tracy Roller said.

SGA proposes legislation for recreation center

Work on an expansion of the recreation facilities at Ball State University could move from the conceptual stage to the design stage if approved by the state legislature. To increase the likelihood of the project receiving state approval, Student Government Association is proposing legislation supporting the expansions.
