Bill to monitor graduation rates

The Indiana General Assembly has seen growing support to pass a bill that holds universities accountable for their graduation rates, the state's education commissioner said. The Indiana Education Roundtable, a committee made up of educators, business leaders and Indiana General Assembly representatives, listened to a plan Tuesday proposing incentives for universities that raise their graduation rates.

Many honor life of civic leader

ATLANTA - Coretta Scott King, who worked to keep her husband's dream alive with a chin-held-high grace and serenity that made her a powerful symbol of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s creed of brotherhood and nonviolence, died Tuesday. She was 78. The "first lady of the civil rights movement" died in her sleep during the night at an alternative medicine clinic in Mexico, her family said.

Ball State University's partnerships with Apple Computers, Inc. and Gateway, Inc. benefit students by providing discounts, faster computer repairs and financing for university projects. Bush rejects troop withdrawal, defends spying

WASHINGTON - A politically weakened President Bush declared Tuesday night that America must break its long dependence on Mideast oil and rebuked critics of his stay-the-course strategy for the unpopular war in Iraq. "America is addicted to oil, which is often imported from unstable parts of the world," Bush said as he sought to drive the election-year agenda in his annual State of the Union address.

Second phase of renovation slated

Next fall, the Ball State University campus will look much different between Bethel Avenue and Petty Road, complete with smoother streets, a new bridge and a second duck pond. Muncie's Board of Public Works and Safety signed off on construction engineering work Wednesday to begin the second phase of the McKinley Avenue Project, which will cost about $3.

Fraternities consider BSU chapters

TRACK: BSU traveling to South Bend

The Ball State University's women's indoor track and field team is set to head to Notre Dame for their biggest challenge yet. The two-day event starts on Friday, as the Cardinals head to South Bend, Ind., for the Meyo Invitational. The field of participants for this meet consists of several powerhouses from the likes of the Mid-American Conference, Southeastern Conference, Big East and Big Ten conferences.

Alito takes seat on high court

WASHINGTON - Samuel Alito took his place on the Supreme Court Tuesday after winning Senate confirmation, a political milestone in President Bush's campaign to give the judiciary a more conservative cast. The 58-42 Senate vote was largely along party lines as Democrats registered overwhelming opposition to Bush's choice to replace Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, whose rulings have helped uphold abortion rights, affirmative action and other legal precedents of the past 50 years.

Murderer gets another 10 years

A man who was sentenced to 85 years in prison for the March 2004 murder of Ball State University student Karl Harford was sentenced Thursday to another 10 years for crimes that were committed before Karl Harford's murder. "We're happy to see Damien Sanders get another 10 years," said Tom Harford, Karl Harford's father.

Architecture students display models of downtown Muncie

Second-year architecture students who have spent about six weeks developing models of Muncie will display their work today. The opening will take place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Muncie Civic Center lobby, and the models will be on display throughout the month at various downtown locations.
