Documentary filmmaker speaks at Ball State

A Kansas City Public Television filmmaker and producer shared her career experiences with more than 50 students and teachers at the Ball State University Burkhardt Building Tuesday night. Pamela Reichart, who graduated from the University of Missouri Kansas City with a bachelor's in mass communications, has written and produced six documentary films, two of which have won regional Emmy awards.

Burkhardt Building evacuated

Students evacuated Burkhardt Building this morning after areas on campus began smelling like gas. Jim Clevenger, battalion chief at the Muncie Fire Department, said people in Teachers College and Bracken Library also complained about the gas smell. However, Burkhardt Building was the only place to register high enough gas level readings to consider an evacuation.

Court refuses student media appeal

College students are at risk of having their First Amendment rights limited. The Supreme Court refused to hear a case Tuesday on whether college administrators can censor campus newspapers. Justices decided not to review an appeal filed by former collegiate journalists at Governors State University, a small public college in University Park, Ill.

On Friday, people were informed that the oft-touted "virus-proof" Macintosh platform has finally met its match. The future of Apple computer security is being questioned now more than ever. A worm called OSX/Leap-A, according to the antivirus software company Sophos, now attacks computers through instant messaging programs, such as iChat.

Board passes smoking ban

The three-member Delaware County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday morning to enact a county-wide smoking ban following months of controversy among local residents and business owners. The ban will take effect June 21 and will prohibit smoking in indoor public places such as restaurants, bowling alleys, bingo halls and government buildings.

Students voice ideas on diversity

Students and faculty can discuss diversity at Ball State University on a new message board available through Blackboard. The purpose of the message board is to give people an opportunity to voice their opinions and ask any questions they might have. "We wanted people to have a platform," said Deniz Canel, graduate assistant at the Diversity Policy Institute.

'Survivor' winner shares experiences from show

"The Sexiest Winner of Survivor" stole the show Monday night with a combination of witty, humorous remarks and serious issues during his speech, "Character: The Ultimate Survival Tool" at Cardinal Hall in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center. Ethan Zohn, winner of "Survivor: Africa," as well as a soccer player in Zimbabwe, used his light-heartedness and charisma to show students and visitors that they do not have to win a million dollars to make a difference.

Commissioners approve smoking ban

After months of controversy surrounding the issue, the Delaware County commissioners voted unanimously this morning for a countywide smoking ban. The ban prohibits smoking in public buildings except private clubs and free-standing bars. The Delaware County Board of Health already approved the ban, which will go into effect on June 21.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Starting spots open for competition

When the starting lineups are announced before Ball State University's game against Western Michigan on Wednesday, some new names may be read over the loudspeaker. After a one-point loss to Tennessee State in Saturday's Bracket Buster, coach Tim Buckley said all five starting spots are open for competition during the two practices prior to Wednesday's game.

Students learn about engineering, test robots in competition

A group of more than a dozen students from Muncie-area high schools works with mentors from ball State University and local businesses to build a robot that will compete in a competition. The team has been working on the robot since Jan. 7.
