Freshman point guard leaves Ball State to play at Marquette in Big East Conference

Ball State University freshman Maurice Acker has signed a scholarship letter of agreement to transfer and play basketball for Marquette University, according to Marquette's Web site. The Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year will have three years of eligibility remaining in his college career, but he will not be available for game competition until the 2007-08 season.

The two met in college at Georgetown University when Ronny Thompson was a player on the men's basketball team. Civil rights leader Hurley Goodall recalls a time when blacks in Muncie were excluded from the classic sociological studies on Muncie as Middletown. However, the work of 15 Ball State University students, the contributions of 50 black residents such as Goodall and the help of multiple scholars paved the way for the first publication examining the black population.

The Ball State University men's basketball team will announce former Arkansas assistant coach Ronny Thompson as its latest head coach. Thompson was an assistant at Arkansas for three years and is the son of legendary Georgetown coach John Thompson. Ball State is holding a press conference today at 2 p.m.

'Jailbirds' spend hour locked up to raise funds for MDA

Ball State University students and faculty members will volunteer to spend an hour in "jail" to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association's annual Muncie Lock-up event. The event will last from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. today. Cari Peterson, a Ball State alumna and program coordinator for the North Central District of MDA, said drivers would pick up local business professionals and Ball State students who had volunteered their time to be locked up.

SOFTBALL: Ball State to play Big Ten competitor; two starters' playing status uncertain

Facing a school from the Big Ten Conference is no small challenge for any softball team. However, when a team could possibly be without two of its best players, the task can become an even bigger challenge. The Ball State University softball team (8-12 overall, 2-2 Mid-American Conference) will travel today to Purdue University (21-18, 2-2) for a game against the Boilermakers and might be without starting pitcher Amanda Pick and catcher Abby Gross.

Elements Alternative Gifts has reopened after closing its Muncie store in January. But this time, it's all on the World Wide Web. Carolyn Stellwag, one of the owners of the business, said Elements was online when it was open in the Village. "We had customers from all across the country," she said.

LETTERS: Minority student's mother worries about safety, respect on campus

Dear Editor, I am writing as a parent concerned for the safety of my daughter who attends Ball State University. My daughter, Eden South, is under constant harassment from community members who call her and her friends "niggers," from uninterested police - both local and campus - who discount complaints from black students regarding harassment and who badger any groups of more than 10 black students.
