Professor improves history exhibit

A Ball State University professor's research on spoken language has led to changes to employee-visitor interaction in one central Indiana living-history exhibit. Conner Prairie's living-history exhibit, in Fishers, selected Mary Theresa Seig, associate professor of English, to be part of the Opening Doors initiative that created a team to make changes to the park in 2001.

Potential political party switches raises interest

During election years that don't involve a presidential election, voter turnout and interest tend to decrease, but this year's election is piquing interest because the U.S House, Indiana House and U.S. Senate could all switch from Republican to Democratic control.

Polls to be open late

Voting polls will be open until 8:40 p.m. tonight because of a late start this morning, a Delaware County Clerk staff member said. The late start is attributed to technical difficulties with the voting machines.

Server problem causes delay in incoming e-mail messages

Ball State University's Computing Services fixed an e-mail problem Monday night that delayed incoming mail to the Ball State server during the weekend and on Monday. Delivery of mail from other e-mail providers, like Google and Yahoo!, was delayed because people were hacking into unprotected computers and then using them to connect to the Ball State e-mail server for extended periods of time, tying up the server, Loren Malm, assistant director of security, policy, systems and assessment, said.

FOOTBALL: Stability key to Hoke's extension

When Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tom Collins elected to offer Ball State football coach Brady Hoke a three-year contract extension, his focus was on stabilizing the football program. Collins said it was important for the team to be on solid footing for three reasons: recruiting, the renovation of Scheumann Stadium and the removal of talk concerning Hoke's future.

Richard Lugar's favorite hobby is running - and not just for office. You can poke Sen. Evan Bayh. Or at least anyone with a Facebook account can. These politicians have a presence on Facebook, and they're not alone. Bayh and Lugar are part of a growing number of candidates who are using social networking sites to connect with younger voters; but this work is only effective if students do their part.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cardinals win third game in row

With only three games left until the Mid-American Conference tournament, the Ball State University women's volleyball team traveled to Toledo on Saturday. After beating Akron on Thursday, the Cardinals were on a roll when they met up with the Rockets for the second time this season.

Sorority members compete for crown

A human jelly bean and a jump roping sorority member, along with nine other greek women, helped Ball State University's Sigma Nu fraternity raise $1,200 during its third Miss Greek Pageant on Saturday. The Miss Greek Pageant honors women in the greek community, similar to how the Miss Ball State University Pageant honors women in the university, Sigma Nu president Trampas Whalin said.

Ball State University students face obstacles every day - from getting out of bed and making it to class on time to passing exams - but trying to earn an Olympic gold medal presents a whole other list of obstacles. Olympic gold medalist Kerri Strug will be at Ball State tonight to present a program called "Olympic Gold Leadership" at the L.

FOOTBALL: Defense scores first nine points for Cardinals

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Normally when a defense gives up 507 yards of offense like Ball State University did Saturday, there's cause for concern. But the defense played well in spurts against second-ranked Michigan. It produced the first nine points of the game for Ball State and gave the Cardinals the lead at the end of the first quarter.

FIELD HOCKEY: Overtime ends season

The Ball State University field hockey team held Ohio University's leading scorer Torrie Albini scoreless throughout regulation and 10 minutes of overtime. But the Cardinals needed to keep her off of the score sheet a little bit longer. With fewer than five minutes remaining in the first overtime of the Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship game on Saturday, Albini scored the game-winning goal to give the Bobcats the 2-1 win over the Cardinals and a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

SWIMMING AND DIVING: Cardinals lose to MAC rival Redhawks

Their anticipations for a highly competitive match were obtained, even though both the men's and women's teams lost to the Redhawks.

After finishing the first half 12-31, the Ball State University football team came back to finish 26-34 against University of Michigan - the second ranked team in the nation. Although the Ball State football team is often laughed at, the scare the Wolverines got Saturday was serious.
