LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Emens needed to require tickets

Wide-eyed kids clung to their parents outside Emens Auditorium Wednesday night, juiced on the anticipation of what probably amounted to Christmas and birthday rolled up in one - getting to see Jack Hanna and all his animals. All those children I saw that night never made it into the show - never saw one furry four-legged feline, unless it was Kitty back home.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

On Saturday, it took the Cardinals five games to defeat Central Michigan, but senior Amanda McCormick needed all five of these games to set history. Entering the weekend, McCormick was 77 digs away from having 800 digs for the season, with two games remaining in the Ball State University women's volleyball regular season.

CROSS COUNTRY: Coach ends BSU career after Regional

Saturday was the end of assistant coach Turena Lane's time at Ball State University as the Cardinals' cross country team finished in 13th place at the regional meet. Now planning to move to Miami to join husband and former Ball State track and cross country coach Todd Lane, Turena Lane said she was pleased with the team's final effort of the season.

University responds to protest

President Jo Ann Gora was disappointed with the way protesters treated a conservative speaker at Ball State University Wednesday, and she and the university are taking action to address the fallout. Not only did Gora say she was disappointed with the women who threw pies at speaker David Horowitz, but she was also disappointed with Horowitz himself for the comments he made about her and the university, she said.

With a new level of excitement, men's basketball kicked off its season at home against Northern Colorado on Saturday. The energy and passion of a team with a new coach was evident for fans. The energy present at the game was an indication of this rejuvenated team's potential.

Academic showdown

Sitting in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Forum at 9:00 a.m., the four students comprising the College Bowl team ABCD were chatting away and eager for competition. Ten minutes later, ABCD had won its first match - by a forfeiture. Instead of leaning back and taking a break until its next round, however, Team ABCD - freshmen Cassandra Adamson, Drew Hainz, Brittany Hommerding and Audra White - continued practicing in a mock round.

GET STIFF: 'Millie' hits heights, captivates crowd

Curtain Up! Light the lights! They had nothing to hit but the heights in Friday night's performance of "Thoroughly Modern Millie." Director Bill Jenkins created a "Grande Spectacle" by having gold and brown sets to complement the snazzy 1920s-style costumes and captions above the proscenium during the scenes with Chinese dialogue.

Experience not a factor for freshman

As high school seniors, Audrey McDonald, Kyleigh Jones and Kalynne Proctor averaged a combined 49 points and 15 rebounds per game. All three were All-State selections -¡- McDonald and Jones first team selections in Indiana and Proctor an honorable mention in Ohio.

With fewer than 48 hours before the Ball State University men's basketball team opens its 2006-07 season against Northern Colorado University, Ronny Thompson has signed a new recruit. According to Thompson, Melvin Goins has signed a Nation Letter of Intent to attend Ball State next season.

Despite the somber issue, the members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. fraternity had high hopes for their annual homeless awareness fundraiser. "People don't realize how hard it is to stand around for 24 hours a day and ask for money," James Johnson, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.

Two students shot at Windermere

Two Ball State University students were in stable condition at Ball Memorial Hospital on Thursday after being shot around 7 p.m. in their Windermere Place apartment. Samuel Ghebremichael and Reggie Hill were attacked in Building 4 in what the Muncie Police Department said could have been a robbery.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING: Team travels to Bowling Green for MAC meet

After a tough road loss last weekend to Miami (Ohio) University, the Ball State University women's swimming and diving team will travel again to take on the Bowling Green University Falcons Saturday. Last season, the Falcons finished third, one place ahead of the Cardinals, in the Mid-American Conference Championships.
