Although students had a day off Tuesday, Ball State University staff wasn't so lucky. Classes were canceled due to hazardous weather - but Ball State staff didn't get the day off. University staff accomplish many necessary tasks each day to keep campus running smoothly.

MySpace tops list of sites that dominate time

Even though he is working on a digital media minor, Matt Erwin doesn't understand the hype about MySpace and Facebook, two of the most popular communication sites on the Web. "I use Facebook and MySpace solely for social reasons, for maybe an hour per week combined," said Erwin, sophomore music technology major.

Winter weather not hindering games, has canceled some team practices

Tonight's men's basketball 7 p.m. game for the Ball State University men's basketball team against Northern Illinois University is still on. According to Chris Taylor, the director of communications & marketing and the team's sports information director, the team is still playing, it's just a matter of whether or not they'll be able to come back to Muncie after the game.

TRACK: Cards send statement at Forum

After last weeks competitive Meyo Invitational where the Ball State University women's track and field team did not win a single event, the Cardinals enjoyed more success at the Anderson University Runners Forum Saturday. Ball State won all but one of the 12 events it entered, and managed to do so without straining its roster.

A Ball State University faculty member might have acted in a recently released pornography that was filmed in a campus building. This brings the total of Ball State-affiliated actors in "Vampire Diaries" to six, with five students also working in front of the camera.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Team sweeps opponents at tournament

Coach Joel Walton's solution for the Ball State University men's volleyball team's serving problems this weekend was simple, having the team do primarily short serves, instead of jump serves. The end result was the Cardinals winning the Volleyball Hall of Fame Morgan Classic during the weekend, after defeating Rutegers-Newark University, 30-27, 30-18, 30-18, in the semifinals and Springfield College, in the championship match, 30-23, 30-19, 30-24.

Ball State alumna picks up Grammy

A Ball State University alumna took home one of the top honors in the music industry Sunday. Angelin Chang, a 1990 graduate, won the Grammy for Best Instrumental Soloist Performance with Orchestra for her performance of Olivier Messiaen's "Oiseaux Exotiques.

Upon hearing the name of infectious mononucleosis, commonly known as mono, students envision feeling weak all the time, sleeping a lot and missing a lot of school and work. Clearly, the kissing disease doesn't arouse happy thoughts in many people.

JUST LISTEN: Solutions for smoking ban

A recent Ball State Daily News article cited a Health Center statistic, which found that 5 percent of students smoke every day. Ball State University's current enrollment is around 20,113 students - yielding just over 1000 smokers. If we factor in the number of faculty and staff who puff on the nasty, the number is even higher.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards' offense fails to show up

After a win Ball State University's men's basketball team coach Ronny Thompson described as "ugly," the Cardinals traveled to Miami University looking for consecutive wins for the first time since Jan 19. Instead the Cardinals just played ugly as they fell to the RedHawks 66-44 Saturday.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Second-half defense leads Cards to win

After allowing 45 points in the first 20 minutes Sunday against Kent State University, Ball State University coach Tracy Roller knew her team needed to pick up its defensive effort in the second half. That's precisely what the Cardinals did, holding Kent State to 24 points on 33 percent shooting en route to a 74-69 home victory.

All things chocolate

Two-time taste-test winner Tessa Hines stood behind her first-place creation as passersby took samples of her chocolate cheesecake brownies. At six years old, the kindergartner is a baking competition veteran. Chocolate lovers came from around the area to the Minnetrista Cultural Center's Cantina Room on Sunday to sample sugary confections entered in the 5th annual "All Things Chocolate" baking competition sponsored by Indiana Public Radio.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Doubles teams fall in clutch; Cardinals lose two matches

Tiebreakers were a recurring theme for Haly Calderwood and Jennifer Pollack this weekend. Both of the No. 1 doubles team's matches came down to tiebreakers. Friday, the duo lost 9-8 (7-0) to the University of Cincinnati's Elizabeth Young and Hannah Hinton but rebounded to knock off Michigan State University's Christine Bader and Stephanie Kebler 8-7 (7-5).

Program head steps down

Freshman Connections is getting a new director next fall who could begin revamping the program one year earlier than expected. Director Paul Ranieri is stepping down from the position he has held for 10 years as head of the Freshman Connections program, which helps students acclimate to Ball State University.

MEN'S TENNIS: Cards switch hairstyle, break losing streak

After four consecutive losses, the Ball State University men's tennis team looked to change its luck and show its unity by getting Mohawk haircuts.-á Sophomore Joe Vallee said the Mohawks had the desired effect as Ball State improved to 3-4 on the season by defeating Valparaiso University and the University of Indianapolis 7-0 Saturday.

THE O REPORT: Writing exam needs change

Passing the Writing Competency Exam is a graduation requirement for all Ball State University students. Though the examination is justified as a necessary means of assessing student performance and knowledge, the current format is flawed. As it stands now, the exam does not adequately measure some students' writing ability.
