Before Spring Break, I wrote about my trip to New Orleans last year and how I spent four days gutting out ruined houses and how it gave me things to think about on the way back. I finished with a sort of segue into this week's column about how I was going to go back to work in the same area and do the same kind of work and come back with a different set of questions.

MEN'S GOLF: Team names Smith honorary golf captain

When freshman standout Travis Smith died in a traffic accident Jan. 27, the Ball State men's golf coach was in the process of determining the spring season captain. To remember Smith from a team and spiritual standpoint, coach Mike Fleck and his players easily decided Smith should be the honorary captain for the 2007 season.

To a young writer, getting published can seem a daunting task. The "In Print" festival, sponsored by the Ball State University English Department and now in its third year, gives aspiring authors the opportunity to meet newly-published writers and learn how they managed the difficult road to their first publication.

BSU expects to profit from WNIT game

The attendance of 3,581 at Ball State University's second round home game in the WNIT exceeded the athletic department's expectations. To secure the second round home game, Ball State bid to pay a minimum of $8,296 to the Women's Collegiate Sports Association with the assumption 2,250 tickets would be sold for the game against the University of Kentucky, according to bid documents.

BASEBALL: Cardinals ready to begin conference season

The Ball State University baseball team will start its 2007 Mid-American Conference season by celebrating its 2006 MAC Tournament championship. Before Sunday's final game of a three-game home series against University of Akron, Ball State athletics will hold the ring ceremony celebrating the championship that took the Cardinals to the NCAA Regionals last season.

TJ's plans move across University

TJ's Great Burgers on University Avenue in The Village will be closed for about five weeks before it reopens across the street. The restaurant will move into the former Little Havana Tobacco Cabana location, owner Richard Reece said. It has already moved most of its equipment and furniture to the new location, he said.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Clock ticking for Roller contract negotiations

For the past six years, Tracy Roller has said she's been trying to build a tradition for Ball State University women's basketball program. However, unless Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tom Collins gives Roller a contract extension by March 31, Roller will no longer be the coach of the women's basketball team.

Students help sick, poor

College Spring Break is a time for students to relax and take a break from their busy schedule, but this year, eight Ball State University students headed down to Guatemala to provide medical care for those in need. Matt LaFlash, senior pre-medicine and Spanish major, said the Timmy Foundation, a non-profit organization out of Indianapolis, sponsored the trip, which lasted from March 10 to March 17 and included five professionals, including a pharmacist and lawyer.

Despite some tears and fumbled words, power exchanged hands smoothly Wednesday during Ball State University Student Government Association's Inauguration Ceremony. Team Lisec executives swore in senators and passed their titles over to the 2007-08 executives of U.

Students working sleepless nights to finish up final papers and projects now have a chance to work in the comfort of their homes thanks to a developing Google feature. Ball State University Libraries has begun using the Google Books Search Project, a large-scale book digitalization project of scanning books and placing their contents online where anyone can access the information.

Thinking back to the 2006 Student Government Association election, we're reminded of the similarity between The Cardinal Movement and Team Lisec in terms of platform ideas. In the end, professionalism scored Team Lisec the Daily News Editorial Board's vote, though the casual nature of Cardinal Movement's members made us wonder what fresh blood could do for SGA.

BASEBALL: Pitcher wins weekly honor

Ball State University's Kyle Heyne led the baseball team to two victories last week at Wake Forest, earning the Mid-American Conference West Division Pitcher of the Week award. Heyne earned his first win of the season after pitching 1.1 innings in relief on March 13, including a scoreless ninth inning to lead Ball State to a 7-6 victory.

Student wins award for dress created for class

The 1940s was a decade dominated by World War II. As men were sent to fight in the war, women were given more opportunity to work. Prices were down, and confusion overpowered many. Common items were restricted: food, money and fabrics. This atmosphere was the inspiration for Ball State University senior Mary Morris.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Ball State kicks off conference season

Last season, Ball State University finished 3-5 in Mid-American Conference play. Despite consistently playing three freshmen, coach Kathy Bull feels her team can finish in the top half of conference play. The Cardinals will start their MAC season this weekend with two matches, hosting the University at Buffalo Friday and the University of Akron Saturday.

Director to leave Ball State, says offer too good to refuse

Patrick Barkey, director of economic policy studies at Ball State University, is looking for a change, and so he is leaving his life in Muncie and heading west for the mountains, hiking trails and rural economy of Missoula, Mont. Barkey said he finds his position as associate director of the Bureau of Business and Economic Research at the University of Montana a challenge.
