Museum celebrates 70 years

Students and faculty will be honoring "Icons of Art" by dressing in costume for the 72nd Annual Student Art Show today from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Ball State University Museum of Art. The Student Art Show will be in conjunction with the Art Museum's 70th Anniversary Exhibition.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Roller receives $181,000, four-year deal

With two days left on her contract as the women's basketball coach, Tracy Roller signed a four-year deal Thursday that pays her a base salary of $181,000 per year, a 70 percent bump over last year's salary. The deal guarantees the most successful women's basketball coach in Ball State history will receive at least $724,000 over the next four years and locks her in as coach until March 31, 2011.

BSU mentors walk to help children

A walk through the Quad is normal for Ball State University students getting to classes during the week, but some will do it to help underprivileged kids Saturday. The Ball State University chapter of College Mentors for Kids, an organization dedicated to exposing "at-risk" children to college atmosphere, will have its fifth annual Walk for Kids on Saturday.

Athletes violate drug, alcohol testing policies

Seven suspended student-athletes will be eligible to compete and practice next week after serving 30-day suspensions for testing positive for banned substances, according to a report released by Ball State University. A total of 17 athletes have violated the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics alcohol and drug policy this school year, according to a report obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.

BASEBALL: Cards hope to improve standing

After a two-game break from Mid-American Conference play, the Ball State University baseball team will return to MAC play with a three-game away series this weekend against Miami University. The Cardinals (11-13, 2-1 MAC) are in fourth place in the MAC West.

Ball State University students rushing to complete their taxes before April 17 still have time to seek assistance and complete their tax forms quickly and accurately. "My suggestion is to start now," Internal Revenue Service spokeswoman Pat Brummer said.

Roller receives four-year contract

Tracy Roller signed a four-year deal worth $181,000 Thursday to remain women's basketball coach at Ball State University. The contract will keep Roller, whose initial contract at Ball State expires Saturday, with the program through the 2010-11 season. Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tom Collins said Roller's $181,000 base salary next season will be the same amount as Cardinals' men's basketball coach Ronny Thompson.

Musical combines show tunes to chronicle woman's life

Self-described as lacking natural singing and acting ability, senior Katie Clark said she has worked diligently through the years to structure her talent base to complement her strongest skill: dance. Clark's perseverance has culminated into a leading role in "One for My Baby," a show that combines show tunes from various musicals to chronicle the life of an inexperienced performer as she grows and develops her talents.

Students want women's basketball Coach Tracy Roller to stay at Ball State University, according to Student Government Association senators who voted in support of renewing her contract. SGA pushed legislation through Wednesday recommending Roller's contract be extended because of her winning record and passion for Ball State.

Late Loop trolley starts April 5

Take the trolley and leave the car. Weekend nights downtown and in the Village could be safer and easier for Ball State University students who choose to hitch a ride on the free Late Loop that starts next week. Beginning April 5, the Muncie Indiana Transit System is implementing a trial bus route, "The Late Loop," which will serve neighborhoods east of campus, the Village and downtown Muncie.

Growing up in a small house where the TV was always on, Ball State University student Troy Reutebuch developed a way to escape by exploring art. "Art was just kind of a way to get out of the house without actually getting out of the house," he said. To this day he still has to have the TV on when he's drawing because he needs white noise, he said.

The days of finding a sober weekend driver to get from downtown Muncie to the Village just got easier. MITS, with the help of Muncie businesses, is offering an experimental east of campus loop that also extends to the downtown Muncie area. The Late Loop will run on weekends between April and March to gauge whether it should be made permanent.

A Ball State University student responsible for a fatal car accident was not legally intoxicated but could still face criminal charges, Sgt. Brad Arey of the Muncie Police Department said. Junior Todd Lamkin, 21, who was the driver in the accident that killed freshman Travis Smith, had a blood alcohol level of .
