Pi Beta Phi raises money for kids

The first serve of Pi Beta Phi sorority's annual volleyball tournament, Arrow Games, was hit at 7:10 p.m. Monday at Irving Gym. Twelve teams gathered to raise money for Pi Beta Phi's Arrowmont vocational school in Gatlinburg, Tenn. Arrowmont is a school of arts and crafts that has one- to two-week workshops in the middle of the Smokey Mountains for children of all ages.

Trial costs $1.3 million for defense

The McKinney v. Duplain civil trial, which has cost Ball State University about $1.3 million, could return to court if a U.S. District Court judge approves a motion for a new trial. On Feb. 4, a jury found that former Ball State police officer Robert Duplain did not use excessive force when he fatally shot then-senior Michael McKinney four times in 2003.

WOMEN'S GOLF: Cards in 10th of 15 teams after first day

After finishing with the best score at its last two events, the Ball State University women's golf team finds itself in 10th place after the first day at the Indiana Invitational Monday. The Cardinals are 35-over par and 50 shots behind the leader, Purdue University, after the first two rounds of play, both of which took place Monday.

Ball State college gets dean

Effective May 12, the College of Applied Sciences and Technology will have a new dean. Terry King, provost and vice president for academic affairs, said Mitch Whaley, chairman of the School of Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Science, was chosen to lead the college after a nationwide search.

TRACK AND FIELD: Bishel moves into 2nd in BSU record book

Ball State University sophomore Ali Bishel claimed a fourth-place finish at the 2008 Stanford University Invitational last weekend. Because of the large number of entrants, the 10,000-meter run was divided into two sections. Bishel's time of 34:37.63 placed her fourth in her section and moved her to second all-time in school history in the event.

WOMEN'S GOLF: Winning streak ends for Ball State

After two consecutive wins, the Ball State University women's golf team's win streak came to an end Tuesday. The Cardinals finished 11th out of 15 teams at the Indiana Invitational with a plus 61 in the three-round invitational. Ball State finished 73 strokes behind the event's winner, Purdue University, which was the one team to shoot below par for the two days.

Players to represent BSU on national level

Two Ball State University athletes were selected to represent Ball State University on the national level Monday. Football player Brandon Crawford and men's golfer Ross Cosat were selected to represent the Cardinals at the 2008 NCAA National Student-Athlete Development Conference.

BASEBALL: Cards' winning streak hits double digits

The good play continued for the Ball State University baseball team Tuesday, as the Cardinals beat IPFW 24-6. The win pushes the team's win streak to double digits, as it has won 10 straight in two weeks. The 18-run margin was the largest of the season for the Cardinals, as they improved to 18-9 on the season.

BASEBALL: Cards head to IPFW for midweek game

Most weeks the Ball State University baseball team plays two midweek games, but that is not the case this week as the Cardinals have only today's game versus IPFW. Ball State is 17-9 on the season and has won nine straight dating back to a loss to the University of Notre Dame March 25.

Obama coming to Ball State

Sen. Barack Obama's campaign office announced the presidential hopeful will visit Ball State University on Saturday. Obama will speak in Irving Gym. Doors will open 7:45 a.m. and the program begins at 9:45 a.m. The stop will be part of Obama's four-day campaign tour of Indiana.

Zombies attack!

I couldn't imagine sitting in a group of bushes next to the McKinley Parking Structure by the Music Instruction Building at 10:30 p.m. Monday. Two zombies were behind me, and I eyed them with my NERF rifle. As the Spring Semester began, I knew Humans vs. Zombies would be the highlight of the season.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards fall to No. 12 team

Less than four days before playing for the conference regular season championship, coach Joel Walton said he is not concerned, but he's not happy with his team's performance this weekend. The No. 6 Ball State University men's volleyball team lost to No. 12 George Mason University 33-31, 30-26, 26-30, 30-26 on Saturday at Worthen Arena and for the second consecutive week lost to a nationally ranked team in non-conference play.

Students register more than 100 to vote

A group of Ball State University students has looked beyond campus to find young people wanting to vote before today's registration deadline. Junior Joe Huber said he and five others began working on a project in February for their telecommunications ethics class that expanded beyond the assignment's guidelines.

The Ball State University women's tennis team's conference woes continued this weekend in its two shutout losses to Eastern Michigan University and the University of Toledo. The Cardinals (8-8, 1-4 MAC) have been shut out in all four of their conference losses this season.

Coming off two consecutive wins, the Ball State University women's golf team will have a tougher time finishing at the top of the leader board this week. Ball State coach Katherine Mowat said the field at the Indiana Invitational, a two-day event that the Cardinals will play in, is a really strong field.
