Ball State's expansion into nearby neighborhoods has some landlords upset

Ball State University's "master plan" for expansion has left some Muncie landlords angry about its effect on property taxes, which is forcing them to raise rental rates for students. Ball State has bought property in neighboring areas for the past few decades, said Tom Morrison, associate vice president for human resources and state relations.

Toy gun play puts students in jail

Two theatre students' rehearsal of a play took a dramatic turn when it was interrupted by Ball State University police. Gene Burton, director of public safety, said police arrested sophomore Keith Deibel and freshman Alex Dunning on preliminary charges of disorderly conduct after the students were found with a toy gun at Bracken Library on Sunday.

Atop a double lotus in the center of Ball State University Museum of Art's special exhibitions gallery sits a life-sized meditating Amida Buddha statue, hands upright in its lap. Julia Corbett-Hemeyer, professor emerita of religious studies, sat cross-legged on the floor facing the statue in the room one Wednesday in late January, mimicking the statue's position.

Ball State University continues its search for a road victory at 7 p.m. at the University at Buffalo. The quest for a win away from Worthen Arena has grown increasingly heartbreaking to the Cardinals in recent weeks. In its last four road games, all losses, Ball State has been outscored by a total of 11 points.

When Phil Eatherton arrived at Ball State University in the fall of 1992 he did not practice with the men's volleyball team for a majority of his freshman season. Teachers College dean to step down

Roy Weaver, dean of Teachers College, said he will step down from his position. According to a press release, Weaver has been the dean of Teachers College for 14 years, and he will remain in his position until Ball State University finds a replacement. Weaver will devote his time to teaching and conducting research, according to a press release.

No slates running in SGA 2008 elections

With about three weeks until the 2008 Student Government Association presidential elections, nobody showed up to the nomination convention Monday night to show their interest in running. Lynda Wiley, director of the Office of Student Life, said she began working at Ball State University in 1997 and this was the first time since then that no students announced they were going to run.

Mills, Lacy give U.N.I.T.E.D. platform update

U.N.I.T.E.D. Initiative campaigned with 33 platform items. Some of the items the slate members knew would not be finished by the time their term was finished after Spring Break. Most are completed or will begin by the end of this summer. President Betsy Mills said she was appreciative of the executive cabinet members and Ball State University Student Government Association senators who have helped get the items started and completed.

Potholes pop BSU bus tires

Along Bethel Avenue between the Alumni Center and Northside Middle School, the winter weather helped create a pothole, Supervisor of Bus Operations Gary Moses said. At the time, he said, two Ball State University shuttle buses were driving at night and the drivers couldn't see the hole.

Police arrest two students at library

Two Ball State University students who were arrested at Bracken Library on charges of disorderly conduct have been released from Delaware County Jail on $1,000 bail, according to jail officials.

Forever Cardinals

For more than a decade five former Ball State University athletes had to wait to receive the university's highest athletics honor. With Friday's induction ceremony at the Alumni Center, the wait was finally over. Football's Brent Baldwin and Brad Maynard, men's tennis' John Noble, gymnastics' Sarah Mikrut (Doyle) and men's volleyball's Phil Eatherton were inducted into the Ball State Athletics Hall of Fame as the class of 2007-08 in front of family, friends, coaches and many others.

Newly appointed city officials will help keep Muncie clean and safe, according to Mayor Sharon McShurley. Since McShurley stepped into office in January, she said, she has replaced some officials, some have remained in office and some have not reapplied for their positions.

Despite being called for a couple three-second violations for spending too much time in the lane, Ball State University's women's basketball players weren't about to abandon the paint area Saturday. That's the region of the court in which the Cardinals earned their keep, surviving a late scare to snap their two-game losing streak with an 80-64 victory against the University of Akron.

Two computers missing

Two computers intended to provide students with relief from long waits at the Amelia T. Wood Health Center were stolen before they were installed. Medical Director Kent Bullis said he filed reports late last week with Ball State police claiming two desktop computers and keyboards were stolen from a back office in the clinic.

Freshman middle attacker J.D. Gasparovic said the most difficult thing for him about transitioning from high school to college volleyball this season was adjusting to the game's increased speed. After starting both matches for the Ball State University men's volleyball team this weekend, he said that transition is becoming easier.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Second-half run dooms Cardinals

Most of the season, Ball State University coach Billy Taylor has espoused the philosophy of creating offense by getting defensive stops. An early second-half scoring spurt by the University of Akron prevented the Cardinals from doing that Saturday night, resulting in a hole that Ball State couldn't get out of as it lost its sixth straight game, 70-61 to the Zips.
