Ball Gym overtaken by robots

Robots took over the basketball court in Ball Gym on Sunday for the second annual Robot Scrimmage. Six high school robotics teams from across the state met at Ball State University to test and debug their robots before a For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology regional competition in March.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: A winning tradition

Win No. 1 Feb. 28, 1964 Ball State def. Earlham 15-8, 15-8, 15-4 After being a club team for five seasons, Ball State won its season opener against Earlham in three games. Known then as the Ball State power volleyball team, the Cardinals had eight of its nine starters return from the 1963 team, including Ralph Evans - the 1964 MIVA Most Valuable Player.

Work study hours remain unchanged

With a weak economy and the newly passed stimulus package, the future of federal and institutional work study at Ball State University for next academic year is still blurry. According to a report released by the Career Center in January 2009, the number of students working on campus increased by five percent, compared to January 2008.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards stop Buffalo's stampede

It was a clash of Mid-American Conference divisional leaders on Sunday as the West-leading Ball State University men's basketball team took on East-leading University at Buffalo at Worthen Arena. Fifteen tied scores and lead changes later, the Cardinals handed the Bulls a 53-51 upset in front of a crowd of 3,565, snapping Buffalo's nine-game winning streak and putting the Cardinals in better position for a division title heading into the MAC Tournament beginning March 10.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: MAC's best visits Worthen

Mid-American Conference Division leaders will clash on Sunday as the West-leading Ball State University men's basketball team plays host to East-leading University at Buffalo in a 2 p.m. showdown at Worthen Arena. The Cardinals (10-12, 5-5 MAC) will play their final game of the regular season against the East Division on Sunday and are hoping to break their current three-game losing streak.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards hit milestone with win No. 1,000

The Ball State University men's volleyball team is two games away from winning its 1,000 all-time match. Ball State defeated the Milwaukee School of Engineering 30-13 in the first game of its best-of-five match tonight at Worthen Arena. Since becoming a varsity sport in 1964, the Cardinals have won 999 matches heading into tonight.

Campus potholes increase with ever-changing weather

If you drive down Riverside, don't be surprised to see cars swerving as if massive boulders are suddenly appearing in front of them. Unfortunately, it's almost worse. With the changing weather, Muncie streets are lined with potholes, causing erratic driving and blown-out tires.

Love for less

The struggling economy is crippling companies throughout the country, but it isn't having the same effect on local restaurants' and flower shops' Valentine's Day sales. Several popular Valentine's Day restaurants aren't seeing much difference this year. Marcia Thompson, co-owner of the White River Landing, said she wasn't worried about getting less business on Valentine's Day despite having fewer reservations than previous years.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cardinals maul Bobcats

The Ball State University women's basketball team finished off its last Mid-American Conference East division opponent with an 80-72 win against Ohio University on Saturday in Worthen Arena. The Bobcats took the lead early with a 3-point basket but junior guard Audrey McDonald hit back-to-back threes to take the lead, which the Cardinals (17-8, 9-2 MAC) never relinquished.

Student arrested in relation to robbery

A Ball State University student and another man were arrested late Wednesday night after robbing a Pizza King deliveryman on the 300 block of North Calvert St. At about 10:30 p.m., Ball State student Adam Sickmann, 20, and Andrew Weddle, 21, threw Pizza King employee Nathanael Rigney to the ground and kicked him, according to the police report.

Northern Illinois remembered one year after tragic shooting

One year ago today, students at Ball State University were shocked by a shooting that left five dead less than 300 miles away at Northern Illinois University. Student Steven Kazmierczak killed five and wounded 18 other students before he killed himself last Valentine's Day.

The Ball State University women's tennis team will travel to Indianapolis on Saturday with some momentum after grabbing its second consecutive shutout victory Tuesday. The Cardinals defeated IUPUI 7-0 last week and Valparaiso University with the same score earlier this week.

The Ball State University women's basketball team will take on Ohio University - its last Mid-American Conference East opponent for the regular season - at 1 p.m. Saturday in Worthen Arena. The Bobcats (8-14, 4-6 MAC) have lost four of their last five games this season but have a balanced team and "a couple of kids that just play really, really hard," Ball State coach Kelly Packard said.

The Ball State University's men's tennis team hopes the third time is the charm as it plays its third Big Ten team of the season. Both of Ball State's losses this season were to Big Ten teams, and Northwestern University wants to keep the streak alive Sunday in Evanston, Ill.
