Deadline for prospective SGA slates changed to Sunday

Students interested in running in the Student Government Association election have until Sunday at 5 p.m. to turn in an election packet, Elections Chair Marco Pretell-Vazquez said. The SGA election ballot is scheduled to be finalized next Monday. According to the election code, since no slate met the requirements to run at the first nomination convention Monday, students have until the ballot is released to enter their candidacy.

Despite having slammed one student into the wood floor and demonstrated multiple knees and punches on others, Etay Furman says that he thinks of violence as being a last resort. Furman gave a demonstration Monday night at Irving Gym of Krav Maga, an Israeli system of self-defense.

Chemistry program top in state

Ball State University had the most chemistry students graduate with an American Chemical Society accreditation in Indiana, according to the society's latest report. A press release issued Feb. 10 said 44 students graduated with this accreditation in the 2006-07 school year, which was the most recent report.

When senior Jorge Rodriguez comes home to his apartment from school, he has to make sure no one is ready to jump him. That's because Rodriguez and senior Jose Perdomo have known each other for so long that surprising each other is almost expected. "He's always playing pranks on me," Rodriguez said.

GYMNASTICS: Meet to be broadcast live on Internet Thursday

Even though the Ball State University gymnastics team will be on the road Thursday, fans can still watch its meet live. Ball State's meet at Southeast Missouri State University will be available on a live webcast beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday. The webcast will be run by KFVS12.

BASEBALL: Ball State sets lineup

With his lineup set and three days left before the start of college baseball season, all Ball State University baseball coach Greg Beals has left to do is make sure his players' uniforms fit. Beals was unsure of how sophomore Kolbrin Vitek would be used in the everyday lineup but has decided to use him as the Sunday starting pitcher and play him at third base the rest of the time.

Smoking ban doesn't worry local owners

Even though the proposed smoking ban in the Indiana House of Representatives has been amended to exempt most bars, local restaurant and bar managers said they were never worried about it. Co-owner of Doc's Music Hall Michael Martin, a non-smoker, said the issue has never been something he has ever thought about a lot.

Slate fails to apply correctly

Despite the best efforts of the Student Government Association, the Elections Board and the one slate that showed up this year's nomination convention suffered a fate similar to last year's. Unlike last year, a slate showed up to the convention, but the Elections Board decided the slate's election packet did not meet all the requirements.

Student creates group to change policy

One Ball State student is encouraging others to take a stand on national economic policy. Senior Cody Willis' unofficial student group, Let's Stand, will meet at 10 p.m. today in Bracken Library Rm. 401. He said his goal was to get a diverse group of people together and come up with a multidimensional business plan with hopes of changing national policy.

The nomination convention to announce a slate's intention to run for SGA was Monday night, and the only slate that showed up had errors in its application.

Standing on the diving board at Ohio University in February 2006, David Linn thought he had nothing but time as a Ball State diver. Fast-forward three years and now Linn stands a senior and ready to dive for the last time as a Cardinal. Linn, along with follow seniors Mark Augustyn and Kyle Hembree will make their final trip to the Mid-American Conference championship this week.

The 1988-89 Ball State University men's basketball team will be featured for its 20th anniversary as part of the athletics department's annual Men's Basketball Alumni Reunion Weekend on Saturday. Members of Ball State men's basketball from 1960 through 2008 will attend the reunion weekend, Ball State announced today.

Student Government Association's nomination convention is expected to run smoothly, Elections Chair Marco Pretell-Vazquez said. The Elections Board met Friday to address any last minute issues before the convention, he said. The board made sure it was unbiased and able to contact each other should a problem arise.

Network changes begin

Today marks the beginning of phase 1 of Ball State's transition to a more secure wireless infrastructure. In phase 1, like the system set-up last semester, students will need to use their Ball State username and password to log in to the network via their internet browser.
