WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards notch sweep in Indiana University Invitational finale

BLOOMINGTON - The Ball State University women's volleyball team found itself in a familiar position Saturday in Indiana University's Assembly Hall. After holding on to win 25-23 in the first set against George Mason University, the Cardinals found themselves down 19-20 in another close second set.



FOOTBALL: Students show support for Love on Facebook

Sitting at home Sunday afternoon, Brian Heathcott and Dan Dowler continued to think about Dante Love. More than 12 hours after seeing the Ball State University wide receiver carted off the field because of a spinal cord injury, the two students were trying to find a way to show their support for the hospitalized player.


CROSS COUNTRY: Cardinals place high in Bloomington

The Ball State University cross country team finished the Indiana Intercollegiates strong Friday afternoon, taking third place. In addition, senior Vanessa Gilbert (18:44) led the Cardinals, finishing in 10th place. The Cardinals' five scoring runners placed in the top 31 of a field of 159.

Fire destroys downtown apartments

Dozens stood and watched helplessly as a raging inferno destroyed their homes and belongings Saturday at Thomas Apartments in downtown Muncie. Captain Paul Sykes of the Muncie Fire Department said when firefighters arrived at the scene, at least three people were hanging out of third story windows screaming for help.



SOCCER: Cardinals get milestone win

After splitting its final two non-conference games of the season, coach Michael Lovett described the Ball State University soccer team's performance as a tale of two games this weekend. After falling behind 1-0 Friday against the University of Loyola Chicago (3-7), Ball State (4-4) responded with three goals to pick up a 3-1 win.

FOOTBALL: Former high school coach says Love's football career over

Dante Love's former high school coach, Doc Gamble, turned on Saturday night's game at Indiana University as the paramedics were pulling away from Memorial Stadium. Gamble said he wasn't too worried when he heard his former player was inside the ambulance, so he turned the television off and continued his evening.


FOOTBALL: Thrill of victory marred by the loss of a teammate

There were no smiles or joyous celebration when Ball State University's players walked into a packed media room after their 42-20 victory at Indiana University on Saturday night. Instead of finding happiness in one of the football program's biggest wins, the players desperately wanted a medical update on receiver Dante Love, who lay in a bed at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

As I sat in the stands at Memorial Stadium with the final seconds ticking off the clock of Ball State University's first victory against a BCS opponent in program history, I couldn't help but remain seated, worrying about No. 86 sitting in a hospital bed somewhere.

BLOOMINGTON - The Ball State University women's volleyball team closed out its weekend in the TIS Bookstore Indiana University Invitational today with a 3-0 win (25-23, 25-23, 25-10) against George Mason University at Indiana's Assembly Hall. The Cardinals (4-10) finished 1-2 on the weekend after being defeated on Friday by the University of Cincinnati and host Indiana University both by 3-0 scores.

FOOTBALL: Love suffered spinal cord injury

Ball State University receiver Dante Love underwent a five-hour surgery that ended early Sunday morning to repair a cervical spine fracture and spinal cord injury, team physician Dr. Jay Matchett said. Matchett said Love is currently moving all four extremities. A team of neurosurgeons examined Love late Saturday night and early Sunday morning, according to a press release from associate athletics director Joe Hernandez.


Blaze destroys building

Dozens of Muncie residents remain in shelters or living with friends or family after a fire started at a downtown apartment building Saturday evening. Fire crews continued to investigate the cause of the blaze, which began about 7 p.m. at the 30-unit Thomas Apartments on Mulberry Street.


Taking it personally

Nate Davis no longer does a double take, but he still doesn't understand it when he sees Ball State University students wearing Indiana University apparel around campus. The Cardinals' junior quarterback said few things bug him more than seeing his fellow students wearing other teams' clothing.


SOCCER: Cardinals split weekend games

The Ball State University soccer team ended non-conference play with a 4-4 record after splitting its games Friday and Sunday. The Cardinals defeated the University of Loyola Chicago 3-1 Friday to extend their winning streak to three games. Jacki Eft led Ball State with two goals in the game.

Ball State University's first victory against a BCS opponent in 43 games - a 42-20 victory at Indiana University - was overshadowed by a harrowing hit on star receiver Dante Love. Immediately after the win, coach Brady Hoke rushed into a packed media room, addressed the throng for 30 seconds and jetted away to check the status of his senior receiver.


Broken water main closes Health Center

The Amelia T. Wood Health Center had to turn students away after a backhoe broke a water pipe near the center, Health Center Director Kent Bullis said Friday afternoon.
