THE BOGEYMAN: Outsourcing hurt Muncie's economy most

What's at the heart of Muncie's economic problems? No jobs. What happened to them? Ask an economic conservative, and he will tell you that freer trade and fewer restrictions on corporations have vacuumed jobs overseas. Ask an economic liberal, and he will tell you that unions pushed for wages far in excess of what a person screwing bolts into widgets for eight hours a day should make.

Christmas in October

The holidays might seem like a faraway dream for Ball State University students who have been back to school for a little more than a month. However, students already have the opportunity to get started on turning their dorm room, apartment or house in a winter wonderland.

Fall chic

It's officially fall - and that means more than just changing leaves and cooler temperatures. It's the time of year when silhouettes become more structured, and deeper-colored fabrics increase in abundance. So what do you need to know to keep up with runway trends this fall? And how can you make it work on a college budget? Local retailers share some tips.

THE NEXT LEVEL: Obama needs to show up for Ind. to go blue

The last five months Presidential campaigning reminded me of "The Wizard of Oz" at times. The public views Barack Obama as the lion with no courage and John McCain as the tin man that doesn't have a heart. That makes Joe Biden the scarecrow without a brain and Sarah Palin as the newcomer Dorothy with her faithful terrier Toto - who is starring as an Alaskan Moose.

10 years and still Googling

Google can now be used as a noun or a verb. But where did the name originate 10 years ago? The name comes from the word "googol" meaning 10 to the 100th power, which is considered an infinite number. Considering the company's expansion in the past 10 years, the name seems fitting.

FOOTBALL: Labor of Love for players

Nate Davis and Trey Buice didn't try to hide the reality that teammate Dante Love weighed on their thoughts during Saturday's game against Kent State University. The two Ball State University football players walked into the Cardinals' football complex after their 41-20 win wearing red T-shirts reading "Ball State's Dante Love No.

OUR VIEW: Boredom boom

Homecoming is over and the duldrums of entertainment are upon us. We must wait another year before we can have a bonfire on LaFollette Field or race down Riverside Avenue on a bed - at least legally. The football team will be away at the University of Toledo this weekend, leaving the majority of Cardinals fans behind.

SPORTS FOR THOUGHT: Cards need better defense against running

No matter how dominant the win, Ball State University football coach Brady Hoke has found something to gripe about after each game his team has played this season. The issues he brings up are seldom dire. At one point in the season, he's been displeased with the Cardinals' running game as well as the kickoff coverage and return teams.

President gives update

With a couple months under its belt, the Campus Alliance slate has finished some platform items and started the process of working on others. President Frank Hood, Vice President Carrie Cozad, Secretary Ebony Strong and Treasurer Moses Jones, cabinet members and senators have talked to administrators, students and the city of Muncie to try and push through the 24 platform items Campus Alliance campaigned on Spring Semester.

The Ball State University women's volleyball team didn't reach the five-win mark last season until it defeated the University of Akron on Nov. 3. This year's squad was able to collect its fifth win, first home win and its first Mid-American Conference victory of the season in its 3-1 (25-20, 25-12, 23-25, 25-13) win against Eastern Michigan University in Worthen Arena Saturday night.

OUR VIEW: Don't fret finances

Here are some numbers for you to crunch: 228, 205, 778, 700 billion. Figuring out what these figures mean for the nation's future was enough to cause our political and economic leaders to freak out Monday. The numbers refer to the U.S. House's 228-205 vote to reject the $700 billion bailout, which caused the Dow Jones to decline 778 points.

STATE OF BALLS: Ball State not prepared for zombie attack

Ball State University has improved immensely in the past few years. Aesthetically, it's obvious. Shafer Tower, Scheumann Stadium's renovation and the David Letterman Communication and Media Building are all recent efforts to beautify the campus. Multiple colleges and departments have also made reputations for themselves across the nation.
