The snow has been coming down hard this year and temperatures have been below average throughout most of the country, especially in the Midwest. Picture Ball State University, where there are large white vans that drive around. They have multiple windows and a small Ball State University decal on the side. Except these aren't creeper vans that roam campus – they are the Charlie's Charter escort service. These large white vans provide free rides for students on campus, anywhere around campus.

As I sat at my parents celebrating Christmas over break, I thought back to my past Christmases and quickly realized how closely I connect some of my memories with places and buildings. I wonder how many of you out there have had similar experiences. How often does the memory of a time or event in your past rely on the setting in which it took place? Ball State trustee says extending Gora's contract righ thing to do

Thomas DeWeese, a veteran member of the Ball State University Foundation, said extending President Jo Ann Gora's contract for two years past her current term was simply the right thing to do. DeWeese is the president of Ball State's Board of Trustees, which decided unanimously during its Dec. 18 meeting to extend Gora's contract to June 2014 from June 2012.



Ball State student calls for cans to help ARF

Despite the Muncie Animal Shelter remaining open, the winter months are causing a strain on Muncie's Animal Rescue Fund. To help relieve some of that strain, a large dog crate will be available in the Atrium for Ball State University students to donate empty pop cans for ARF starting today.



OUR VIEW: Hit the refresh button; it's a new semester at Ball State

Regardless of what happened last semester, that is all in the past. For better or worse, today's new semester marks a start that we all can look forward to. It's an opportunity to start new classes, get involved in student organizations and spend the next two months braving through the brutal weather as you walk down McKinley Avenue to your classes.


Construction on University Avenue to begin Tuesday

The Indiana American Water Company will begin construction on a new water line along University Avenue on Tuesday, Ball State University announced. The new line will extend from the intersection of Tillotson Avenue east to the dock at Ball Memorial Hospital. Most of the work will be on or under the north sidewalk. University Avenue won't be closed and the work should have little effect on traffic.


MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Ball State falls 2 spots to No. 13 in coaches poll

Four days before playing its season opener, Ball State moved down two spots to No. 13 in the top 15 coaches poll released Monday night. The Cardinals received 50 votes — 23 fewer votes than in the preseason poll — as the University of Hawai'i and UC San Diego moved ahead of Ball State.
