The Cardinals are soaring as Ball State takes down Central Michigan in a 4-0 shutout to stretch their winning streak to four, their longest since 2006. Ball State improves to 2-0 in MAC (Mid-American Conference) play marking the second time in a row that the Cardinals have started 2-0 in the MAC standings.
“A win streak is always great and I think we were coming to every game and approaching it wanting to win,” head coach Caitlin Walsh said. “Today the team really bought into that and they played a good 60 minutes.”
Sophomore midfielder Fleur Knopert took over the field, as she earned her first career hat trick with a goal in the first quarter and then added on two goals in about 90 seconds in the final quarter of play. With the performance, Knopert extends her scoring streak to three games.
“There was just a lot of space,” Knopert said. “When you have the space, [you] just take the shot.”
Senior midfielder Rachel Bohn added to the scoring frenzy by scoring her career-high third goal. It was her second goal in four games as the senior looks for the team to make a statement as the season continues.
“I feel like this win streak has shown that this is Ball State field hockey,” Bohn said. “This is the new era, we are excited looking into Sunday.”
In the offensive barrage, Ball State registered 24 shots as a team, as well as only allowing the Chippewas 10 shots all game. Goalie Hannah Johnston only had to make five saves throughout the contest, a major showing to the rest of the Mid-American Conference.
“We’re just taking it game by game,” Walsh said. “It is always nice to have a couple of wins and gain that confidence and momentum, but at the same time we are approaching every game like it’s a clean slate and everyone’s record is 0-0.”
The Cardinals will stay at home for a non-conference matchup against Lindenwood Sept. 24 at 12 p.m.
