HB 1608, banning educators and third-party vendors from teaching human sexuality in the classroom, passed through the House and will now be going to the Senate. The vote was 65-29, according to Rep. Sue Errington's (D- Muncie) press secretary.
The bill also states schools must tell parents if a student wants to go by a different pronoun, name or title. In order to be called by a different name or pronoun, the school must receive written parental consent at the start of the school year. The bill has been equated to Florida's "Don't Say Gay" legislation.
At the committee reading Feb. 20 at the Statehouse, protesters gathered in opposition to the bill. Opponents far outweighed supporters of the bill. However, the bill ended up passing to second hearing 9-4.
