The Ball State men’s golf team traveled to Kettering, Ohio to compete in the Dayton Flyer Invitational. The Cardinals finished 7th out of 13 teams with graduate student Joey Ranieri tying for ninth individually.

There were two new faces in the lineup this week, first-year Carter Smith and second-year Drew Todd

“Those two guys earned spots in and it bumped a couple of regulars out of the lineup,” head coach Mike Fleck said. “Obviously the good thing is that they got some experience now, we can kind of look at the entire roster and everybody got a chance to compete this fall to kind of gauge where they are both individually and as a team”

Monday - Round One

“You know, the weather, the cold temps, the wind, the course conditions, NCR [golf course] is a championship venue and it was showing its teeth,” Fleck said. You compile that up with what we experienced with the wind and the cooler temps; it was a grind, that's for sure.”

Being in the number one spot again, it would be Ranieri who would lead the Cardinals. Ranieri shot a 5-over-par score of 76 in his opening round.

Playing in his first tournament of the year, Smith was second best for Ball State, shooting 6-over-par 77.

Also in his first tournament, Todd posted a 7-over-par 78 with 12 pars, Khan would also shoot 7-over-par 79.

Hare would round out the final round, shooting 9-over-par 80.

Monday-Tuesday - Round Two

Due to darkness, a portion of the second round was started Tuesday morning starting at 11 a.m. due to frost as well.

Ranieri again led the Cardinals in round two, shooting a 1-over-par 72 with three birdies in the second round.

Khan posted a score of 2-over-par 73 with a stretch of nine pars in a row from holes two through ten. Smith posted a 4-over-par 75 performance.

Hare shot 8-over-par 79 followed by Todd 14-over-par 85.

Tuesday - Round Three

Ranieri and Khan would both lead the Cardinals in the final round with a 1-over-par 72. Khan would have four birdies on the day in his efforts.

Hare would drop five strokes from round two to round three shooting a 3-over-par 74.

Smith shot 7-over-par 78 and Todd finished at 10-over-par 81.

Ball State men’s golf will not focus on the winter ahead and prepare for the spring season.

“We got to continue to really kind of figure out what we're doing on the greens,” Fleck said. “We just give up way too many strokes on and around the putting [green]. It's interesting. We're also just a little different between Monday through Friday then we are on the weekends. We've got to work through some of those things and get a little bit better with some of our systems to be more prepared for the spring and be more competitive.”
