In its first two Mid-American Conference (MAC) matchups of the 2022 season, Ball State Women’s Volleyball (8-6, 0-2 MAC) dropped a pair of games to Central Michigan (9-4, 2-0 MAC).

The first game on Friday night saw the Cardinals losing in four sets (25-18, 20-25, 22-25, 19-25) despite a hot start that earned them the set one victory.

Despite the Cardinals leading in all but one statistical category, the Chippewas’ superior hitting percentage and twelve fewer attack errors helped them rebound to win three straight sets and complete the reverse sweep.

First-year outside hitter Katie Egenolf led the team with 15 kills in her first colligate start followed by fourth-year outside hitter Natalie Risi (14) and fourth-year middle blocker Marie Plitt (13).

The second game, on Saturday, saw the Cardinals giving up a 2-0 set lead to lose in 5 sets (25-23, 25-12, 20-25, 22-25, 17-19).

Plitt led the Cardinals in the second match with 13 kills followed closely by fourth-year opposite hitter Natalie Mitchem who tallied 12 kills of her own.

“It’s about consistency, we have moments where we’re playing really good ball, but then our lows are just consistently too low,” head coach Kelli Miller Phillips said. “We just got to keep working, figuring out who’s going to be out there, the right combination of people to finish matches off.”

Ball State returns home next week for another set of conference matches against Eastern Michigan (1-13, 0-2 MAC) – the first match will be Sept. 30 at 6 p.m. in Worthen Arena.
