Thursday, the Ball State College Democrats, Indiana Democratic Party and College Democrats of Indiana hosted three political candidates that are running in the 2022 midterm elections in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center at 6 p.m.

The candidates included Jeanine Lee Lake (U.S. House, Indiana District 5), Melanie Wright (Indiana State Senate, District 26) and Sue Errington (Indiana House, District 34).

The event was a part of the “Hoosier Promise” college tour, which is organized by the College Democrats of Indiana. The goal of the tour is to bring Indiana’s Democratic candidates to state universities, therefore allowing them to meet constituents, register young voters and explain the platforms they would follow if elected to serve.

The execution of the event was overseen by Ball State College Democrats President Monet Lindstrand. Linstrand is a third-year honors student and a political science and women and gender studies double major. She organized the event as a way to activate young voters ahead of the midterm elections  Tuesday, Nov. 8.

“What you vote on in local elections is going to directly impact you,” Lindstrand said. “So things like laws being made in the Indiana Statehouse that impact our state but not those around it are really important. Small things like local taxes, property, education, and school board elections really have an impact on your everyday life, which I think people don’t recognize.”

Each candidate took turns discussing their values — topics discussed during the event included state law regarding abortion, taxation, education and healthcare.

“We have the inflation reduction act, we’ve got the loan forgiveness act, and we have a president and a leader and a party that’s doing phenomenal things,” Lake said. “When we say Democrats deliver, we mean that.”

Students interested in affecting these issues can register to vote via the state’s online voting portal. Those wishing to connect with the Ball State College Democrats should plan to attend their next meeting  Thursday, Sept. 29 in Letterman Building room 125.
