May 28 Delaware County Sports Roundup: Semi-State and Sectional Champions are crowned, among other results

After days of rescheduling due to weather, eight Semi-State or Sectional events for Delaware County sports took place across girls tennis, softball and baseball. Here are the results:

Delta Girls Tennis Semi-State V. Fairfield

Delta High School Girls Tennis is heading to the State Finals June 3-4 after defeating Fairfield High School 3-2 May 28 at noon. This is the fifth Semi-State Championship in program history. 

In No. 1 Singles, Fairfield’s Addison Mast defeated Delta senior Gwendolyn Clark 6-2, 6-1. In No. 2 Singles, Delta sophomore Gabrielle Knight defeated Fairfield’s Faith Bontrager 6-7 (7-2), 7-5, 6-4. In No. 3 Singles, Fairfield’s Elyse Yoder beat Delta freshman Brylee Beckley 6-7 (9-7), 6-1, 6-4. 

In No. 1 Doubles, Delta’s pairing of senior Maggie Hunt and junior Janet Wegener defeated Fairfield’s duo of Abigail Gall and Ella Branneman 6-3, 6-0. In No. 2 Doubles, Delta senior Madelyn Haley and junior Iva Witter beat Fairfield’s Iris Miller and Kate McGuire 7-6 (7-3), 1-6, 6-3. 

The Eagles are set to face Oldenberg June 3 at noon at Central Grove High School in the State Quarterfinals. If they win, they will face the winner of Fishers V. Ev. Memorial in the State Semifinals June 4 at Center Grove. 

Yorktown V. Delta Softball Sectional Semifinal/Yorktown Sectional Championship

In a semifinal matchup of Sectional 24 (3A) hosted by Delta High School, No. 3 in 3A (coaches poll) Yorktown High School Softball (23-3) defeated Delta (10-15) 8-0 May 28 at 10 a.m. to advance to the Sectional Championship at 5 p.m. against Guerin Catholic (9-11). This was the Tigers’ third victory over the Eagles this season. 

Purdue-Fort Wayne commit, senior pitcher Alanah Jones hit a two-run home run and a three-run home run and sophomore second baseman Ava McNally hit a three-run home run for Yorktown. For Delta, only three hits were collected, all courtesy of different batters. 

On the mound, Jones pitched four innings, allowing no hits, no runs, no walks and striking out nine batters. In relief, sophomore Caitlin LaFerney took over and pitched three innings, allowing three hits, no runs, no walks and striking out four. 

The Sectional Championship was a historic game, as Yorktown defeated Guerin Catholic 1-0 in 15 innings to win their seventh Sectional Title in program history. Not only was the score of the game historic considering it’s length, both the Tigers and the Golden Eagles showcased legendary pitching performances. 

For Yorktown, Jones was once again on the mound, pitching 158 pitches in 15 innings, allowing one hit, no runs, no walks and striking out an unprecedented 33 batters of 48 faced. Guerin Catholic senior and Dayton Softball commit Izzy Kemp threw 215 pitches in 15 innings, allowing three hits, one run, one walk and striking out an impressive 25 of 52 batters faced. 

Neither the Tigers or Golden Eagles scored until Jones hit a solo home run in the 15th inning, a shot that would ultimately win Yorktown the game. 

The Tigers are now scheduled to face Bellmont High School (13-10) in the Regional Championship May 31 at 6 p.m. at Yorktown High School.

Cowan Softball Sectional Championship

Cowan High School (15-8) defeated Tri-Central (3-13-1) 8-2 May 28 at 3 p.m. in the Sectional 55 (1A) Championship, hosted by Daleville, to win their second straight Sectional Title and 10th in program history. 

Junior pitcher Tatum Rickert threw a complete game for the Blackhawks (Cowan), allowing three hits, two runs and striking out eight Trojans. Junior catcher Aryonna Bynum went 2-4, leading Cowan in hits. 

Cowan advances to the Regional Championship, where they are scheduled to play Cambridge City Lincoln High School (9-13) May 31 at 6 p.m. at Cambridge City. 

Wapahani Baseball Sectional Semifinal

Wapahani junior pitcher Gavin Lash fires a pitch during the Raiders' game one matchup against Cowan in the Delaware County Baseball Tournament in Yorktown, Indiana. Lash and the Raiders picked up the win 12-1.

No. 3 in 2A (coaches poll) Wapahani High School (21-4) advanced to the Sectional 40 (2A) Championship, hosted by Frankton High School, after defeating No. 6 in 2A Monroe-Central (20-9) 8-4 May 28 at 11 a.m. This was the Raiders’ (Wapahani) second victory over the Golden Bears this season. 

Purdue Northwest commit, junior Wapahani pitcher Gavin Lash hit 2-4 with two doubles and four RBI. Senior catcher Luke Willmann hit a two-run home run for the Raiders, his fourth game in a row with a home run. 

With this win, Wapahani advances to the Sectional Championship against Frankton (16-9-1) May 30 at 1 p.m. The Raiders have a chance to win their second Sectional Championship in a row and their 18th in program history. 

Daleville and Cowan Baseball Sectionals

In the first game of May 28’s Sectional 55 (1A) hosted by Anderson Prep Academy, Daleville High School (4-21) was defeated 2-0 by Southern Wells High School (7-14). This was the Raiders’ (Southern Wells) second victory over Daleville this season.

The Broncos (Daleville) had four hits, all via different hitters, and the Raiders also had four hits and earned their two runs via two errors by Daleville. Southern Wells is now set to face Wes-Del High School (15-8) May 30 at 10 a.m. in a semifinal matchup. 

In game two, Cowan (14-9) defeated Liberty Christian (8-14) 5-0 May 28 at Memorial Field in Anderson, Indiana, at approximately 7:25 p.m. Senior pitcher Chase Smith stood out for the Blackhawks, as he took the mound, allowing no runs and recorded RBIs at the plate. 

Cowan is scheduled to face Tri-Central (2-20) May 30 at 12:30 p.m. at Memorial Field in a semifinal matchup. The Sectional Championship is scheduled for May 30 at 6 p.m. at the same location, against the winner of Wes-Del V. Southern Wells. 

Yorktown Baseball Sectionals 

In the first round of Sectional 24 (3A), Yorktown Baseball (16-11) lost to Jay County (15-8) 4-3 May 28 at approximately 5:30 p.m. In this contest, the Tigers recorded as many hits as they did runs and no run was driven in via hit, as junior Jackson Furnish, junior Landon Case and junior Garrett Thurman each were credited with RBIs but no hits. 

Senior Indiana State commit Jacob Pruitt was one of the three Yorktown players to record a hit, as senior Olivet College commit Hayden Carrow and junior Cole Temple each collected a hit as well. 

Case and Pruitt pitched for Yorktown, with the former tossing one inning, allowing two hits, no runs, no walks and striking out one. Pruitt pitched six innings, allowing five hits, four runs (although none were earned), four walks and recording eight strikeouts in his final game for the Tigers.
