Vice President for Student Affairs Ro-Anne Royer Engle sent a campus-wide email June 19 announcing a young man was shot and killed on West Abbott Street. She said he was a Ball State student.

Kathy Wolf, vice president for marketing and communications, confirmed the victim's name was Montana Miquel Lopez, who the Muncie Star Press reported was a Ball State freshman.

The University Police Department (UPD) announced in an emergency alert at approximately 2:30 a.m. June 19 it was investigating reports of shots fired near West Abbott Street and North New York Avenue. At 9:45 a.m., UPD announced there was no ongoing threat to campus, but it was still investigating the incident.

Royer Engle said in the email the Muncie Police Department is also investigating the shooting. She said student affairs staff will provide support to the victim's family and to any students in need.
