Ball State President Geoffrey Mearns sends letter on commencement

In a campus-wide letter sent out Aug. 10, Ball State President Mearns said the plan to hold spring and summer commencement on Oct. 10 was no longer feasible due to the ongoing risk of COVID-19.

The fall commencement ceremony planned to be held in December will also be postponed, Mearns said.

"I know that this news is disappointing. I regret that the circumstances of this public health crisis have forced us to postpone all in-person celebrations of our 2020 graduates and their achievements" he said. "Unfortunately, we are facing an unprecedented challenge that, for months, has required us to make difficult decisions that have resulted in many sacrifices."

Mearns said that he is "cautiously optimistic" to hold spring commencement in May of 2021, and welcomed any 2020 graduates to join the spring ceremony or other future commencement ceremonies to be formally recognized.
