Stephen Ferris will be the next dean for Ball State's Miller College of Business, according to a press release. His appointment starts July 1.

“Stephen brings extensive administrative experience and an entrepreneurial spirit that places students at the center of his vision for the college,” said Susana Rivera-Mills, provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs, in the press release. “I am confident that Stephen will successfully engage faculty, alumni and other community stakeholders to move the Miller College forward and advance our University’s mission and strategic plan, Destination 2040: Our Flight Path.”

Ferris is a Navy veteran and the current dean of the College of Business at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. He began his academic career in 1983 teaching finance at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia. He also fulfilled academic and administrative roles at the University of Missouri in Columbia from 1993 to 2018.

His articles researching subjects such as capital markets, corporate governance, bankruptcy and legal analysis of corporate activity have been published in academic journals including The Financial Review, which he served as the editor for from 1997 to 2003.

Ferris said in the press release that Ball State President Geoffrey Mearns' vision drew him to the university.

“Innovation is key to education, scholarship and discovery, especially with how we use technology and online platforms. Like President Mearns, I believe community engagement is an integral part of the university and of business education, both in economic development and student success," Ferris said in the release.

Former dean of the Miller College of Business Jennifer Bott left the school in May 2018 to pursue a position as the provost and vice president for academic affairs at Western Michigan University. Dr. Mark Myring served as the interim dean of the college until Ferris was selected.
