Despite struggling after day one of the EKU Colonel Classic, Ball State jumped up the leaderboard during the final round on Saturday.
Sophomore Liz Kim notched a career-low 71 during the second round of play. This performance put her in a tie with Eastern Kentucky’s Elsa Moberly for the best score on Saturday. Kim finished the weekend in 11th place while tying her career-best 54-hole total of 222.
“I’m pretty pleased with my performance,” Kim said. “Round one started pretty rough with a couple big holes but ended strong. Then I really got things figured out in round two later that day. Round three was really where I capitalized on all the things I learned in the previous rounds.”
As a team, the Cardinals sat in 11th place before hitting the links one more time to round out the tournament on Saturday. Saturday’s score of 298 moved the Cardinals up to sixth place to end the tournament. The 298 final-round score was only topped by host team Eastern Kentucky who tallied a 291.
“I think we were able to move up six spots because we saw all the shots we left out there and had a plan in place to make sure we capitalized in our final round,” Kim said. “We all executed our game plan really well in the final round.”
With the final-round push, the Cardinals beat out two other Mid-American Conference foes: Akron and Ohio.
“[Saturday’s] finish was one of our best of the season,” head coach Katherine Mowat said. “We always talk about finishing strong, and to shoot the second-best round of the day, jump five spots and finish ahead of two MAC teams was a nice accomplishment.”
Junior Manon Tounalom finished the outing with a total score of 228 to finish tied for 20th overall. Also contributing to the team’s performance was freshman Hadley Moritz who scored a total 229 on the tournament with a low round score of 73.
Running away with the tournament was host school Eastern Kentucky who finished 11-over-par as a team. This was a 13-stroke advantage over second-place Northern Illinois.
Ball State will compete in the Hoya Invitational April 8-9. This will be the final regular-season outing before the MAC Championships later in April.
