Ball State’s freshman forward Thelma Dis Agustsdottir has been on a scoring tear, and she maintained her hot-streak against Buffalo Wednesday night, but it wasn’t enough as the Cardinals (6-10, 1-4 MAC) lost their second straight conference game to the Bulls (11-4, 3-1 MAC) 77-65.
Agustsdottir made her presents known early against the Bulls carrying the load for the Cardinals on the offensive end scoring 11 of Ball State’s 19 points in the first quarter. She continued to be aggressive throughout the game and finish leading the Cardinals in scoring with 21 points just two shy of her season-high, making it her second 20-point game of the season.
Ball movement played a key part in the Cardinals success in getting Agustsdottir open looks as the team assisted on 19 of their baskets, however Buffalo senior Cierra Dillard's 21 points and junior Theresa Onwuka 16 was just too much for Ball State.
“I liked the fact that [Agustsdottir] got 15 shots up, we were pretty balanced [on shots] … that’s a good job sharing the ball,” Sallee said.
The forward was able to knockdown her shots at an efficient rate making 9-15 of her attempts from the field. Agustsdottir also expanded her range connecting on two three pointers in the contest.
“She had a lot of minutes tonight, it’s just what we had to do and she handled it well,” head coach Brady Sallee said.
In the past three games, Agustsdottir has shown growth and has put up strong numbers making this the third game in a row that she ended with double-digit scoring.
“She’s starting to understand her role much more,” Sallee said. “She is starting to understand we need her to score, we need her to be efficient.”
Agustsdottir is averaging 19 points and six rebounds in the three game stretch against Bowling Green, Ohio and Buffalo and has managed to knock down shots at a consistent rate making 23-35 from the field. She has also been able to stretch the floor more by stepping out to the three-point line and posing a threat for opposing defenses. She has shot 6-9 from behind the arc during this stretch.
“She’s pretty crafty out there and we get her in a lot of different places and she does some good things with it,” Sallee said.
