Redshirt juniors Riley Neal and James Gilbert will be transferring from Ball State for the 2019-2020 season.

Ball State Athletics confirmed reports that the two starters would not be returning for their final year of eligibility.

In a statement released by the athletic department Neal said, "“My decision to leave Ball State and pursue another opportunity is a personal decision. It is the best for me at this time. My decision has nothing to do with Coach [Mike] Neu, his staff or the direction of the program. I want to publicly thank Coach Neu, Coach Lynch and the rest of the coaching staff for everything they have done for me. I am looking forward to seeing the success of Ball State Football!”

Gilbert, when asked, declined to comment stating that he wasn't ready to talk about his decision yet.

Yesterday, sources close to the team said at least one of the transfers came as a result of "the coaching staff not taking some of the players seriously and not making adjustments when needed after a loss."

These reports come the same day that Beth Goetz, Ball State director of athletics, announced Head Coach Mike Neu would be returning for his fourth season.

Neu declined to comment when asked about the departure of the two players.

At quarterback, Neal amassed 7,393 passing yards and 46 touchdowns putting him third in school record books for both.

Gilbert ran for 2,806 yards and 30 touchdowns, good enough for seventh and tied for fifth in school history, respectively.

No reports have surfaced about where the two players plan on transferring.
