After bringing in nine new senators, Student Government Association (SGA) members continued to establish the organization for the upcoming year.

SGA senators divided into one of six committees.

Committees create the majority of legislation for SGA, said Kam Bontrager, SGA pro-tempore.

“I like to call them the powerhouse of the senate,” Bontrager said. “They are supposed to be pushing out legislation ideally at least every month.”

Senators chose to be involved in one of the following committees: academic affairs, community and environmental affairs, diversity and multicultural affairs, governmental affairs and community advancement, student safety and student services.

Academic Affairs

Senators on this committee create legislation on anything and everything academic. Previous committee members have run Hit the Books Bash, a stress-relief event for students during finals.

Community and Environmental Affairs

This committee focuses on impacting campus environmentally. Last year, the committee members established a green council and started work on a community garden

Diversity and Multicultural Affairs

Senators here promote diversity, especially by working with the Big 4 multicultural organizations. Members hosted an event to bring awareness to hearing impairment last semester.

Governmental Affairs and Community Advancement

Legislation from this committee focuses on connecting the Ball State and Muncie communities. Potential legislation could look at fixing sidewalks on the border of campus.

Student Safety

Committee members work to improve student safety. Last year, senators started work on a safety app for campus. They will continue to work toward implementing the app on campus, said senator Kirk Malone.

Student Services

Student services works closely with RHA to create legislation focused on the dorms. Senators looked at potentially implementing free tampons in the dorms last fall.
