In its Thursday meeting, faculty council unanimously approved two items on its agenda — one for office hours and one for faculty representation on the Board of Trustees.

A proposal submitted by Jim Flowers, a professor of family, consumer and technology education, asked for a vote to recommend adding a faculty member to the Board of Trustees.

“In this day and age, wouldn’t it be great if we could do this,” Flowers said.

Faculty council chair Tarek Mahfouz said an ad hoc committee will be created to research adding a faculty member to the Board of Trustees and write a recommendation in support of the change.

At the same time, university senate chair Kourtland Koch will meet with President Geoffrey S. Mearns to discuss what faculty is asking of the university.

Interim provost Marilyn Buck also proposed language be added to the student handbook regarding office hours. In a statement to faculty council, Buck said she often receives questions about policy regarding office hour requirements and recommended a clarification.

To make office hour information more accessible, Buck recommended leaving office hour requirements up to departments, but to mention the stipulation in the Faculty and Professional Personnel Handbook.

“This basically reflects what’s currently going on. It’s just putting it in the handbook,” Buck said. “Students need to be able to get to faculty and faculty need to be accessible.”

Faculty council unanimously approved this recommendation.

A proposed structure of university governance, which has appeared before university council and campus council, also appeared before faculty council. The subcommittee writing the new structure will continue to edit language and will present it to subcouncils later for a formal vote.

The next faculty council meeting will be at 4 p.m. April 19 in Letterman Building, room 125.
