The Rockets go three-and-out. Junior kicker Jameson Vest puts Toledo ahead 3-0 on a 32-yard field goal.

Ball State redshirt sophomore Zack Blair, the third-string quarterback, is sacked hard on the next drive and is helped off the field with what appears to be a leg injury. Redshirt freshman Drew Plitt takes over. A facemask penalty pushes Ball State over the 50-yard line, but the Cardinals have to punt. Snyder pins Toledo on its own 2-yard line.

The Cardinals move into Rockets territory on the next drive as they run the two-minute drill. Junior Morgan Hagee kicks a 43-yard field goal as time expires to cut Toledo's lead to 24-10 going into halftime.

Third quarter

Ball State receives to begin the second half but goes three-and-out.

On first-and-10 from Toledo’s 12-yard line, Woodside throws to Johnson deep over the middle near midfield. Johnson jumps and tips the pass to himself before running into the end zone for an 88-yard touchdown. The Rockets lead 30-10.

Ball State punts on its next drive, but McKinley-Lewis muffs it. Cardinals junior defensive back Marc Walton recovers the ball on the seven-yard line. Plitt scores his first collegiate touchdown when he scrambles for five yards on fourth-and-goal to make it 51-17.

Toledo redshirt freshman running back Nevone McCrimmon appears to score a 75-yard touchdown on the Rockets next play from scrimmage but a review rules him out of bounds at the two-yard line. The referee puts one second back on the clock, then winds the clock to end the third quarter.
