Horse’s legs are meant for running, not dancing. Tonight, however, they are helping Ball State Dance Marathon raise money.
Polo on the Prairie will be held at the Hickory Hall Polo Club in Whitestown, Indiana.
“We thought it would be something unique, different," Taylor Wong, special events director, said. "Because there are so many other dance marathons across the country, we thought this would make us stand out a bit more.”
Morgan Polizzi, the president of BSUDM, was able to create such a unique event through personal ties with the club. Her brother was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2013.
Riley Hospital was able to help him beat his cancer, which is one reason why she is involved in dance marathon.
“I've truly found my purpose in life through this organization and have had so much joy being a leader, bringing our campus and community together and celebrating the life of our Riley families,” Polizzi said.
Hickory Hill Polo Club knew that Polizzi's brother had battled Leukemia and wanted to honor him by allowing Polo on the Prairie to take place. As with all of the charity events that the club hosts, all of the money received at the event will go directly to BSUDM.
As Hickory Hall has grown in popularity, Austin Chandler, one of the owners of Hickory Hall, said that some charity events have attracted thousands of visitors, and he expects BSUDM to do the same.
At the event, there will be an area for tailgating or picnic-style dining as well as traditional seating areas. Visitors are also encouraged to bring their dogs as long as they are kept on leashes and cleaned up after.
At halftime, a family will tell the story of how Riley Children's Hospital has impacted their life and the Morale Committee will be performing a short version of the line dance.
Collection buckets will also be passed around at the event to encourage donations to Riley Children's Hospital and the cost to enter the event is $20 per-car.
Gates at the Hickory Club will open at 5 p.m. and the matches will begin at 6:15 p.m.
