Editor's note: A previous version of this story said Deon Young was arrested in connection to a previous shooting incident near the Village Pantry on Aug. 28. Muncie Police Department Sgt. Brent Brown confirmed that Young was not related to that incident.
The Muncie Police Department made an arrest the morning of Sept. 4 after a gunshot was fired near the Ball State campus.
MPD arrested Deon Lamar Young, 24, on preliminary charges of intimidation with a deadly weapon and criminal recklessness at 2:49 a.m.
MPD officer Dustin Lee was called in to investigate around 2:30 a.m. on Sept. 4 after a report of a gun being shot and pointed at someone in the area of the 1600 block of West Ashland, according to the affidavit of probable cause.
Officers were close by when the incident occurred and were "flagged down by the victims, who pointed out the suspect car as it was driving away."
The car was pulled over with four suspects inside, including Young, who was arrested at the scene. The three other occupants, a man and two women, were not arrested.
Officers were then able to locate a handgun "out in a yard along the short route where the car traveled."
According to affidavit of probable cause, Lee spoke with the victims who said they were outside a car with two females inside when two males arrived and began yelling at them for speaking to the females.
During the argument, one of the males pulled a gun out and shot it into the air, and then pointed the gun directly at one of the victims before getting into a dark gray car and fleeing the area.
Lee was later able to speak to the two females involved: Lillian Acosta and Chelsea Short, Young's girlfriend.
Acosta told Lee two black males approached the car and began banging on the window. After the women told them to leave, Young and Cody Poore, Acosta's boyfriend, arrived and confronted the two males.
Poore admitted to investigators there was an argument between themselves and the two black males and shots were fired. He did not deny that Young was the one who fired the shots.
Young refused to speak to MPD without a lawyer present and was transported to the Delaware County jail without incident.
Young posted the $10,000 cash bond and was released from jail Sept. 5.
Although the incident did occur near campus, no university emergency alerts were sent out to students.
Sgt. Brown suggested it was likely no alerts were sent out because the situation was taken care of "relatively quickly and there was no immediate danger to students."
