Where: University Green

Date: Aug. 25

Fall recruitment is just around the corner, and the Greek organizations at Ball State want to help students make the decision to join Greek life as easy as possible with their upcoming social event.

Meet the Greeks is an opportunity for anyone considering Greek life to meet the 30 Greek organizations on campus.

Ball State’s organizations are part of the Interfraternity Council, the National Pan-Hellenic Council and the Panhellenic Council. The event will be from 4-6 p.m. on the University Green on Aug. 25.

Sammi Coppedge, a senior and president of Sigma Kappa, said the event is one of the most important pre-recruitment events interested freshman or sophomores can attend.

“It's a great opportunity to come and check out Greek life, as well as to get to know several women from each sorority,” Coppedge said. “I've seen it change the opinion of so many women who aren't sure if they want to go Greek or not, so I recommend that any person at least somewhat interested or curious about Greek life attend.”

Coppedge also said the event is informal and has no effect on recruitment. This means for sororities, interactions with the women at Meet the Greeks won't affect scores during formal recruitment.

The event gives students a chance to figure out which fraternity is best for them, said Greg Carbo, a junior and president of Sigma Chi. He recommends that every guy on campus goes to see the fraternities at Meet the Greeks if only to say they gave it a shot.

“Each organization is filled with men made of different stories, lessons and character,” Carbo said. “Rushing gives guys that opportunity where they can sit down and actually discuss the different aspects of the fraternity to find the perfect fit for them.”

Joining Greek life can make a huge impact on a student’s time at Ball State, giving them different opportunities to go to events or meet new people.

“Joining Sigma Phi Epsilon has given me the opportunity to travel to conferences all over the United States,” said junior Conner McGeehan. “Joining Sig Ep was hands down the best decision I've made since being a student at Ball State.”

Carbo agrees and said being in a fraternity one of the best experiences he has ever had.

“I have met so many guys that not only believe in the same values and morals as I do, but have become my best friends to share the college experience with,” Carbo said. “I love it, and I know guys will if they find the right house.”

Coppedge said being a member of Sigma Kappa helped her grow into the person she wants to be. As a more reserved freshman, she never thought she’d be the president of her sorority, leading more than 140 women.

“Going into my fourth and final year here, I can't even begin to imagine what my four years would have looked like had I not been a member of the Greek community,” she said. “Sigma Kappa has provided me with so many lifelong friends, memories and experiences that I don't think I would have gotten any place else.”
