Baron Hill, former member of the Indiana General Assembly, visited Muncie March 15 to receive endorsements from both Mayor Dennis Tyler and John Dickerson, who ended his own bid for the Senate seat.

Hill is currently running as the only democrat for Dan Coats’ Senate seat in Indiana. He previously worked in the Indiana General Assembly and Congress. He retired but announced his run for Senate last May after becoming frustrated with the tone in Washington D.C. and the political bickering.

“It’s time that we respect one another and try to work with one another to do the work for the American people,” Hill said. “I was that way as a member of the House of Representatives and I’ll be that way as a United States Senator.”

Tyler thanked those who were in attendance and told them that they can have a very decisive choice in how the country will be run, and that this election will be the most crucial one in their lifetimes.

“It absolutely scares me to death what might or might not happen if we’re not careful,” Tyler said. “Nothing stays the same on a daily basis in politics… I’ve known Baron for many years… as a mayor, I need the Baron Hills to represent us in Washington.”

While in Muncie, Hill toured the Courtyard Marriott, which features a training center for people with disabilities. Hill told Tyler that as he has traveled around Indiana, the hotel training center is special and unique to the city. Dickerson, who also endorsed Hill, is the former executive director of the Arc of Indiana, an organization that helps people with disabilities.

“I’m looking to [Dickerson’s] leadership to make sure that I can be an advocate for people with disabilities because they need an advocate. They don’t have one right now, someone in public office and I’d like to become that person, Hill said. “There are people with disabilities who want to go to work, make a livin, they can work and be productive citizens in our communities… I think it is one section of our population that often gets ignored.”

Hill said he is running for many reasons, but one of the most important ones is to go against Donald Trump advocacy of divided America and an America only for certain people. Trump wants to build a wall on the border of the U.S. and ban Muslims from entering the U.S.

“America is for everybody, folks, and if it’s not for everybody, then we ought to just kick the Statue of Liberty into the New York Harbor,” Hill said. “The vision that I have of America is that America is for everybody- black, white, red, yellow, straight, gay, everybody and for people with disabilities.”

Steve Stewart, chairman of the Delaware Country Democratic Party and chief of police for the city of Muncie, also attended the event and said it is important to be involved in the process of the campaign and to vote.

“The more people that vote, that’s our right to vote. There’s people that die in other worlds to vote and here it is our free vote and we get to do it and a lot of people just don’t go vote, which is kind of sad,” Stewart said. “I support Baron Hill because he’s for the working men and women of this country… helping those who are less fortunate, that’s what the Democrat party does, that’s what Baron Hill will do in Washington.”

Tyler said that Hill understands the public safety and infrastructure needs that face mayors in Indiana.

“The one thing that I know there won’t be a day that I’m mayor that Baron Hill is serving in Washington if he sees my name pull up on his phone, he’s gonna pick that phone up. He’ll pick his phone up and he’ll do whatever he can to help our community… at the end of the day, Baron Hill is exactly the type of man we need to serve us as our United States senator,” Tyler said.
