The champion of the Belly Dancer of the Universe Competition is coming to Ball State for workshops and a performance as part of an event hosted by the Belly Dance Club.

The club is hosting its annual Women’s Week Hafla on March 19 at Pruis Hall.

Junior Natalie Aragon, president of the club, said Hafla is a belly dance event where local or regional belly dancers celebrate and perform different types of belly dancing.

Aragon said the club reached out to Samantha Karim, Belly Dancer of the Universe 2016 Egyptian Champion, to come to its event.

“Every year for our Women’s Week Hafla, we try to get someone who is a very successful belly dancer, someone who is famous to us,” Aragon said.

In an email, Karim said she is looking forward to the performance on March 19 to spread the love and the community belly dancing has to offer.

“They can expect to be touched by the emotions that we all feel in our lives,” Karim said. “We are all connected.”

According to her website, The Inner Dancer, Karim has taken dance education in ballet, salsa, modern, free style and belly dance.

Aragon said many students do not know about the club, and many smaller dance clubs get forgotten.

“It is really interesting to see a cultural perspective of a dance club,” Aragon said. “It’d be really interesting for people who don’t know about it to see that it’s not all about Shakira.”

She said the Hafla would be a good opportunity for students to experience the different forms of belly dancing.

Christian Williams, a senior and the vice president of the club, said students should attend workshops because they are free, as there are usually fees for many belly dancing workshops that teach specific techniques.

“What I'm looking forward to the most this Saturday is seeing all of the performers from different places around Indiana doing what we all love, which is dancing,” Williams said.
