Fashion design students will see their designs come to life when they showcase original work at the Fashion Design Society's 18th annual fashion show on March 18.

The event will be at 7 p.m. in the L. A. Pittenger Student Center Ballroom.  Admission is free, but donations for the Muncie Mission will be accepted.

Junior apparel design major Maggie Castrogiovanni is president of FDS and will be showcasing three of her designs as well as emceeing the event. Castrogiovanni said she didn’t used to think about other people wearing her designs, so it is exciting for her to see a model wearing something she created.

“I just like creating the, like, ideas that I have in my head, I like being able to see it made and like seeing someone wearing it," she said. "It’s like, 'Oh cool, that was in my head like a month ago and now… it exists,' you know?"

This is the first time sophomore apparel design major Levi Portillo’s work will appear in a show. He is entering four men’s clothing designs.

“I haven’t had too many people wear my clothing… so finally seeing actual models wearing my clothes and actually showing them off and people saying ‘Oh my god, I want that,’ you know, at some point... I'm excited to see all of that get validated,” Portillo said.

Olivia Cash, a sophomore fashion merchandising and apparel design major, had four garments in last year’s FDS show and entered eight garments this year. She will be modeling one of her pieces.

Cash described the feeling of seeing something she made on the runway “such a high.” Cash enjoys going thrift shopping, buying the ugliest clothes she can find, and finding a way to make it look like something someone would wear.

“I love design… everyone has their own unique touch to something,” Cash said. “That’s what a lot of my pieces this year are based around — is like finding something at you know, Goodwill or any other thrift store that’s like $1 or so and turning it into something else.”

Ali Robbins, a junior apparel design and fashion merchandising major, has been entering garments into fashion shows since she was 16. This will be her first FDS show and she will showcase three belly dance costumes.

“In that first thrill of seeing my garments on the runway, I’ve been hooked ever since. It’s a huge adrenaline rush,” Robbins said.

Gabriella Harbridge is a sophomore fashion merchandising and apparel design major who is entering a crochet halter top into the show. After talking with friends, she realized not many other people had done crochet work for the show in the past.

“I’m glad to put something down the runway that is new in a different way,” Harbridge said. “You have to be driven to do [design]… you have to love [fashion] if you want to make it work.”
