Meyo Invitational

The Ball State track and field team last competed at the Gladstein Invitational on Jan. 23. Since then, the team has had nearly two weeks off, which should be beneficial for the team.

The team is back in action Feb. 5 and 6 at the 28th Annual Meyo Invitational at Notre Dame.

First-year coach Brian Etelman said the breaks between meets offer more preparation for team.

“The more frequently we compete, the less we can train at practice,” Etelman said.

According to the coach, the team does not go more than three weekends in a row with competitions. After a weekend of competing, the girls get Sundays off, but are right back at it starting on Mondays.

“Tuesdays and Wednesdays often become the bulk of [the] training,” Etelman said.

The upcoming meet at Notre Dame is one of the biggest track and field events in the country. With more than 1,000 entries from more than 49 schools and track clubs, this will be one of the biggest Meyo Invitationals in recent years.

Etelman realizes the competition level associated with the meet means it will host some of the best teams in the country. While he hasn’t seen the full list of teams competing, Etelman suspects that University of Michigan, Eastern Michigan University, Indiana University, Notre Dame University, Western Michigan University, Butler University and Marquette University will be there.

Brian Etelman looks forward to laying the foundation for the team this year, as well as future years.

“We were in need of a complete overhaul,” Etelman said. “The athletes have responded really well.”

Along with laying the new foundation, Etelman states that this year is also about “establishing an environment where [athletes] can be successful academically and athletically.”
