Former Cardinal defensive end and linebacker Keith McKenzie was hired to be Ball State’s defensive line coach today.

McKenzie played linebacker and defensive end for the Cardinals from 1991-95 and still holds the record for sacks in a career with 25. His 11 sacks in 1995 are tied for the third-highest single-season total in Ball State history.

Head coach Mike Neu said McKenzie’s experience as an NFL player and D-II assistant coach makes him “a perfect fit for our team on the defensive line.”

For the last eight seasons, McKenzie was the linebackers coach at Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich. During his tenure, he helped 10 players earn all-conference honors.

From 1996 to 2003, McKenzie played in the NFL and appeared in two Super Bowls with the Green Bay Packers, including the Packers’ win in Super Bowl XXXI.

His best statistical season in the NFL was 2000, when he started all 16 games for the Cleveland Browns and totaled a career-high 58 tackles. His 8 sacks that season tied his career-high and he retired with 29.5 career sacks.

McKenzie was also inducted into the Ball State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2007.
