Village reconstruction underway

MUNCIE – The reconstruction in the Village has a new link for Ball State and Muncie. The reconstruction stretches from Martin and University streets to White River Boulevard. The construction was completed just before the start of Ball State's fall semester.

"The Village was in need of an infusion of energy,"Director of the City-County Plan Commission Marta Moody said. "The Village Promenade project has help to bring back the revitalization of the area."

The reconstruction included new pavement, new street lamps, new sidewalks and landscaping of the area.

Alexa Marsh a Community Assistant at Village Promenade says being a part of the reconstruction of Muncie has been amazing.

"I'm glad we were able to bring something so beautiful to the community to get people here. We have brought in new restaurants, new clothing stores," she said. "It’s just great exposure to the Muncie area and I think it has a bright future and I'm excited to be a part of it."

The project links White River Cardinal Greenway to Ball State University.

The Indiana Department of Transportation is expected to open bids for another project that will also connect Ball State to the surrounding areas of Muncie. Later this year, Neely Avenue between New York and Wheeling Avenue may also go through transformation.

The project estimated to cost $1.7 million several years ago. The reconstruction includes bicycle lanes, new sidewalks and storm drainage improvements.

Moody says a Development Plan for the Village area started over 10 years ago and the improvements are not yet complete.
