Following last weekend's South Alabama Invitational, Nicole Steinbach, a junior on the Ball State softball team, has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Pitcher of the Week.

“Nicole has been a warrior on the mound,” Ball State head coach Tyra Perry said in a statement. “She has been a steady player this season and will only continue to get better. Her leadership in the circle raises the team to a higher level.”

Steinbach pitched 20 innings in the Cardinals' five games over the weekend, recording a 2.10 earned run average. She also posted 21 strikeouts.

In the team's lone win in Mobile, Alabama - an 8-0 over Sam Houston State - she tossed Ball State's first complete game shutout of the season . Steinbach pitched five innings in her 10th career shutout victory.

Steinbach also pitched well in a loss to Jacksonville, allowing three earned runs in 6.2 innings pitched, as well as in a relief appearance versus Chattanooga in which she allowed one earned run in 6.0 innings.

The Cardinals return to action on Feb. 27, in Baton Rouge, La., looking to improve their 6-8 record in the Purple & Gold Challenge. Ball State will play Northwestern State at 3:30 p.m. in its opening game of the tournament.
