Women's boutique opens in Village

Juniper, a women’s clothing boutique, opened in the Village just before Thanksgiving Break.

The store carries dresses, sweaters and shirts ranging from around $30 to $60. Tamar Lask, owner of Juniper, said what sets her store apart is its appeal to a wide age range.

“I’ve had a lot of local women -- moms, grandmas, sisters, daughters -- in shopping over the past few days and everybody’s finding something to buy, not just college girls,” Lask said. “Obviously it’s predominantly targeted to college women, but it’s a place where you can come and shop with Mom and you both would go into the fitting room.”

Lask said she’s been happy with the feedback customers have given so far. She said they appreciate the addition to the area.

“[The] general consensus is that people are really happy to see a clothing store in the Village,” Lask said. “And people that are local remember when there used to be things in the Village, so they’re very happy to see life coming back into the Village.”

According to the Small Business Association, small businesses make up 99.7 percent of U.S. employment firms nationwide. In Indiana, there are 106,249 small businesses with employees, according to a 2014 small business profile by the SBA. The same report stated that small businesses employ about half the state’s private workforce.

Lask owns the shop with her husband Peter. They have two other Juniper boutiques, one in West Lafayette, Ind., and one in Oxford, Ohio.

While Juniper is not currently hiring, Lask said people should check back in February and March, after the business’ schedule is worked out. Seven out of the eight shop employees are Ball State students.

Lask said Juniper has a variety of things available to buy for yourself or to give as gifts.

“We have a lot of different items, so whether you’re looking for a formal dress or you’re looking for a pullover to wear to class or a comfy dress to wear out to dinner with your parents, we have all of those items,” Lask said. “So if you’re looking for stocking stuffers or roommate gifts or [for a] gift exchange, we have all different price points for our gifts and jewelry to satisfy different budgets.”
