Robert Downey Jr. Joins the Cast of Captain America 3, Story Will Be Based on Civil War

According to Variety, Robert Downey Jr. is about to sign a deal that will bring Marvel's Civil War event, one of the biggest in the franchise's history, to the big screen starting in Captain America 3.

Originally, Downey was only slated for a smaller role, but this move will make him integral to the plot. It will also create new plotlines for future movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that could include both Ant Man and Doctor Strange.

For those unfamiliar with the Civil War plotline, the government is debating the Superhero Registration Act, which would force anyone with superhuman abilities to reveal themselves to the government. Heroes are divided on the matter, with Tony Stark (Iron Man) being a strong advocate and Steven Rogers (Captain America) being against the measure. In the midst of the debate, the two Avengers will become enemies.

These developments are especially interesting with the rumors circulating that Marvel and Sony are striking a deal regarding Spider-Man, who plays a pretty hefty role in the story in the comics.

Details on how closely the comic's plot will be followed are scarce, but fans should definitely be pumped that Iron Man and Captain America are going to duke it out in 2016.
